We don’t normally post things like this, but this one hit close to home.
My auntie suffers from Muscular Dystrophy, the same condition my mum had before she passed away.
After contacting the council, she was told it would be around 6 weeks just for an assessment, then potentially months more before any decisions were made and any work could be carried out.
In the meantime, she couldn’t safely get down the two steps outside her front door.
She was missing appointments, struggling to leave the house, suffering falls, and is now wheelchair-bound.
Nobody should have to put their life on hold waiting for basic accessibility.
So rather than watch her struggle, we made the four-hour journey to collect the ramp, drove it across to Brentwood, spent a couple of hours installing it, and then made the journey back home to Canvey Island.
By the time we got through the traffic and got home that evening, we’d spent the best part of an entire day helping one person regain their independence.
Was it worth it? Absolutely.
It’s not something we normally do, and it’s certainly not a service we advertise, but family comes first.
The smile on her face when she could finally leave her home safely again made every mile, every hour, and every bit of effort worthwhile.
Do you think people with disabilities should have to wait months for something as basic as access to their own front door?
