As you may know today is World Environment Day, a day for us all to acknowledge the impact we have on the environment and to take the time to make little changes to help our planet.
As a small business we take extra precautions to minimise our environmental impact including recycling all of our cardboard and plastics. At our new premises we took the initiative to install solar panels to reduce our use of fossil fuels as well as using LED energy efficient lightbulbs. We are also slowly converting to a fleet of electric vans, reducing our carbon footprint significantly! Since moving we have also removed all single use plastic from our kitchen, encouraging staff to use paper, wooden or reusable utensils.
Did you know that in 2021, the UK generated 40.4 million tonnes of commercial and industrial waste, 84% of which was generated in England alone. In 2023, the UK sent 22 million metric tonnes of household waste to the landfills, approximately 36% of this waste was packaging which should have been recycled, it will take more than 400 years for all of that plastic to decompose. Shockingly, only 6.7 million metric tonnes of landfill waste was biodegradable.
There are so many ways individuals can help the planet alongside businesses of all sizes. Simple tasks such as consuming seasonal fruit and vegetables, recycling paper and plastic and composting food waste can have a greater impact than you may think.
