🪵 Get ready for those cosy nights by the fire by having your chimney swept!

A chimney sweep will reduce fire risk, save you money by reducing the amount of fuel used, and slash emissions to help the environment and the air we breathe. They can also offer bespoke advice on the correct use of fuel.

You should also make sure your log burner is regularly maintained and checked for wear and tear before you use it again after the warm summer months.

Storing your logs safely is just as important as burning them safely, so make sure you keep them dry in a firewood rack or log basket a suitable distance away from a stove or open fireplace.

With the number of people using open fires increasing, Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service recommend these top tips to keep you safe from chimney fires:

Have your chimney swept regularly by a Certified Sweep before the colder months set in and you begin to use your fire again.

Always keep chimneys, flues and appliances clean and well maintained. Chimneys that have been lined still require regular sweeping.

Never interrupt the air supply by blocking air vents.

Should a fire start, a working smoke alarm can give you the early warning. Have at least one smoke alarm on every level of your home and test them weekly.

As well as a smoke alarm on each level, each room that has a solid fuel burning appliance should have a working carbon monoxide alarm.

Always use a fire guard to protect against flying sparks.

Don’t store wood to close to fires, radiated heat can cause a fire.

Ensure the open fire is fully extinguished before going to bed or leaving the house. Never leave a fire unattended.

Incident 31.01.2023

At 11:30 Brampton Fire Station attended a chimney fire in Brampton. Crews used a hose reel, working at height kit and a variety of ladders to access and extinguish the fire.
A good opportunity to remind everyone to ensure their chimney's are regularly swept and maintained. 🚒

In attendance approx 1hour.

If you have an open fire or stove, always store your fuel in a safe place away from the fire itself. Stacking up your fuel near to the fire could possibly cause incidents.
