Tree cage construction near Dufton this week.
We left off 4 rails on each cage – so that the sheep can carry on getting in until we plant trees in these cages this coming winter. This will keep the grass down and make the planting easier.

Each cage also has two strands of barb wire at the top as there will be horses in this field in the future – and this will stop them nibbling the new trees as they grow.

We used a post knocker on a digger – which made this job a lot easier.
Most sites we go to this wouldn’t be an option – but this was a pretty flat field not too far from a road !

Thanks to the team for that hard work as usual.

We installed these ‘blocking structures’ this week in South lakedistrict.
The site is a SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) – because of the habitat created by the upland mires. These ‘blocking structures’ slow the flow and help to keep the mires wet during dry spells.

We used untreated timber that can be left to rot away naturally.

The team camped on this job – because it was a fair way from Carlisle – we had a very pleasant camping spot – and even saw an adder !

Willow Faggots installed.

We finished the willow job at Warrick Bridge last week.
Here are some pictures – including one of the bank that we did last year – to show how the willow grows. (Or "Strikes") , from the faggots and the stakes that we put in the bank.

The willow holds together the bank – preventing erosion, slows the flow – and provides shade for fish and habitat for other wildlife.

If you look from the exit of the petrol station at Corby Hill , down at Troutbeck – you can see how the 'riparian zone' along this small beck is really bouncing back.

We have been working at Little Mel Fell – we cleared a lot of Rhododendron as well as some non-native Beech and Sycamore trees.
Rather than cut the beech trees down – we ‘ring barked’ the trees – the tree will die – but will remain as ‘standing dead wood’ – which is fantastic habitat.
The tops were removed from the Beech trees – and the ragged cut is called a coronet cut – which will promote rot in the trees – and create habitat.

The holes are drilled in some of the Alder trees which we ‘ring-barked’ last year.
These are 32mm holes on the South and South west side of the trees – which should create perfect habitat for Pied Flycatcher in future yeas.

Thanks very much to Olly (OB Trees) for the technical climbing again – and Aaron Alty creations, for the hard graft.

We finished off the 'continuous willow weave' raised bed yesterday. We put the stakes in back in Feb with Jonny and Gramo - and put the soil in yesterday - the willow was already 'striking'. The idea is to weave in the willow into the walls as it grows.

The bed will be used as a tree nursery and for wild flower plugs.

Great job today - Ash tree removal over-hanging a tree house/ hut. Unfortunately the Ash tree had Ash - die back - and had started dropping branches on the tree house. Great climbing and rigging skills from Olly Bennet (OB trees) , and use of a speed line! It was getting windy up there at the end of the day for Olly ! Mark Lloyd Trees

Shout out to bennet for his help recently – installing Cactus guards at Hellbeck nr Brough and up at Nenthead.
Thanks for all your hard work Olly and these excellent pictures.
The spiky cactus guards allow the trees to grow up without being pushed over by cattle or sheep. The guards can then be re-used on future trees.

Great work today , getting in 1000 trees (guards and stakes) and 20 'Cactus guards' at Penruddock. We also had time to put in some thorn 'hedge-hogs' which don't need guards - and naturally protect a single principle tree. Without the plastic !

Hedge- laying job (Westmorland style) , in Lorton. Great team on this job - got finished very quickly - and customer is happy. 360 of the beautiful surroundings.
