Why Are Some Puppies Born Green? ππΆ
Every now and then, a litter is born and one puppy has a surprising green tint to its coat. It may look unusual, but donβt worry β itβs completely natural and harmless!
𧬠The Science Behind It
Green puppies are usually light-colored (white or cream) and the color comes from a pigment called biliverdin.
Biliverdin is a green bile pigment found in the placenta. During birth, if the amniotic fluid mixes with this pigment, it can temporarily stain a puppyβs fur β especially if the puppy has a very pale coat.
This staining:
β’ Happens before or during delivery
β’ Does not mean the puppy is sick
β’ Does not affect the puppyβs health
β³ Is It Permanent?
No! The green tint is temporary.
As the puppy grows:
β’ The coat naturally sheds and renews
β’ Regular grooming helps
β’ The green color fades over a few weeks
Eventually, the puppyβs true coat color comes through completely.
πΎ Is It Rare?
Itβs uncommon, but not rare. Itβs simply more noticeable in white or light-colored breeds. Dark-coated puppies could experience the same staining β it just wouldnβt be visible.
π‘ Important Note for Breeders
If you ever see a green puppy in a litter:
β’ Thereβs no need to panic
β’ Monitor the puppy like you would any newborn
β’ Ensure normal nursing, warmth, and weight gain
The green color alone is not a medical concern.
