First rule of farming... never EVER believe that a 15min job will only actually take 15 mins πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈπŸ˜ͺ

What should of been a lovely simple move of the electric fence for the heifers resulted in this beautiful masterpiece of tangled mess 🫠

Zoom in... the gear under the handle was completely jammed πŸ₯΄

I think my little young farmer apprentice needs a bit more practice on the fence reel 🀣

At this point, Geraint doesn't even ask what I'm doing anymore. He just walks in, sees (and smells πŸ˜†) a bowl of grass spinning in the microwave and let's me carry on 🀣

Why?

Well its not because I've finally lost the plot (debatable), but because I'm actually trying to work out the dry matter of the silage before we decide whether to pick it up from the field.

Dry matter is so important when thinking about our cows diets and our grass. We ideally want it around 30-35% Dry Matter for a good quality silage for winter feed!

Normally this might mean mowing the grass and leaving it in rows to dry out for a day or so... but this grass I have just tested... is still being mowed!

It's coming down dry!

Several days of baking sun 🌞 might have something to do with it 🀣

But with rain 🌧 forecast next week, the race is on to get the grass off and the slurry on in time for all the goodness to be used to grow some more grass to feed the cows through winter πŸ‘©β€πŸŒΎπŸ‘¨β€πŸŒΎ

Cutest calf of the year so far 😍

This little holstein heifer calf is the latest addition to the Jonesy herd today and what a lovely calf!

Mum is a family fave, a Norwegian Red cross cow and we chose Pine Tree Pursuit (Holstein) for dad πŸ„

The result is this little one with stunning markings πŸ₯°

Can not wait to see how this little one grows, the kids are already choosing her a name 🀣

Never did I think I would be so excited about a ditch 🀣

But this is no ordinary ditch.

This is now carrying a 32mm water pipe out from our bore hole to our grazing fields... replacing the very old 20mm pipes that no longer work very well 🫣

Last grazing season we really struggled with water supply here, and with water being so crucial for our cows, and carting water to the fields all summer absolutely not something we have time to be doing again... we are investing in a new water line instead!

Crossing everything that this works and so thankful Mr Jonesy knows his way around a digger πŸ‘ŒπŸ’ͺ

Does anyone else's cow do this?? 🀣

Everyone knows when Panda has made her way into the parlour because she announces it to everyone.

She scratches her chin, in turn creating a lovely tune with her collar... every single time she's in the parlour... 🀣

It is one of her many quirks πŸ₯°

She comes into the parlour just by calling her name and keeps us entertained with music while she's in.

Between her and the pulsator, all we need now is some flashing lights and we've got ourself a disco πŸ€£πŸ’ƒ

A little milestone for us πŸ‘Œ

All winter the cows have been sitting just under 5% butterfat… properly teasing us 🀣

So to see them jump up to 5.07% feels like a bit of an achievement.

That’s from a herd made up mostly of Pedigree Holsteins and Holstein Friesians, with just 2 Jersey crosses thrown in for good measure.

I always joke that Tiny Girl, our little Jersey, is carrying the whole team πŸ˜‚
But the last milk recording showed several Holsteins over 8% butterfat, and one even over 10%!

Not bad going for the black and whites πŸ‘ŒπŸ„

Might be time to start making butter 🧈🀣
