A week for E & L in three pictures. Garden transformation can occur over a relatively short or a long period, depending on our clients' budget and desire. We returned to a garden we redesigned last year to be welcomed by these awesome tulips.

Secondly, we completed the first large plant of the year in a large mature garden with 150+ plants.

Finally, we finished the week with a more gentile transformation. A neglected shady spot now has a focal point with this Rhododendron “Markeeta's Prize”. Growing to 6ft tall and 4ft wide, it produces incredible red flowers.

If you would like us to transform your green space, please get in touch.

New arrivals in my client's garden. Bees originated in the Cretaceous period, so they are as old as Tyrannosaurus rex!

A local beekeeping association supports this hive as they require care. They are a fantastic addition to a larger garden and many associations are looking for new plots to house their bees. They can pollinate up to 78% of wild and garden flowers and are vit for nature and our survival.

The team were out early last week cutting back hedges in the borough. If possible, it's advised that March marks the end of hedge-cutting activities until August to protect nesting and fledging birds. We will restart in August.

Due to the warmer weather here in the southeast, fronds are developing on this tree fern. We would usually leave this job until March/April, but removing the dying fronds now allows the new growth to become established and for light/air to reach the crown.

February is the start of mulching season. Mulches are loose coverings or sheets of material placed on the soil surface. Mulches can be applied to bare soil or to cover the surface of compost
in containers. At , we add compost thickly around borders to a depth of at least 3 inches/8 cms. As a general rule, you will need more than you think, and you can’t add too much as long as you don’t swamp your plants. Leave a well around the base of small plants.

Mulch adds nutrients and biodiversity to your soil, reduces watering, and suppresses weeds
Improves soil organic matter, warms up soil in spring and protects plant roots from extreme hot and cold temperatures. Over time, it will improve your soil condition if you have clay or chalky soil.

Don’t neglect your trees; we are trimming trees and moving shrubs across the borough before they start budding. Trees enter a dormant state in winter, making it the perfect time to cut them back.

Back to work in 2026. This large garden will be renovated over an extended period. A neglected garden can be daunting; however, I advise you to pick one end and work methodically through the most significant pain points, preparing for hard landscaping, soil improvement, and planting.

Jasmine can be an attractive climber; however, if neglected, it can produce vigorous, thick stems that will eventually pull the pergola down. A hard cut allows us to reset the plant.
