Today, Leeds and beyond mourn the loss of a great man as Terrence McCann is laid to rest. My heart goes out to the entire McCann family during this incredibly difficult time.
While I didn’t know Terry as well as some, I was lucky enough to meet him back in 1984 outside the Merrion Centre with my mate, Tommy Thompson (RIP), while we bunked off school. From selling Christmas paper to sharing laughs at away games and catching up in clubs during the ‘90s, Terry’s presence was always memorable.
Terry had that rare ability to light up every room and every life he touched. He never had a problem with anyone, and nothing was ever too much trouble for him. He was one of those people the world could use more of.
I’ve painted a tribute to Terry, filled with the things he loved and held dear—Angel Inn, clubbing, live gigs, VYT, and tabs. I didn’t quite get to finish it properly, but it’s a reflection of what he stood for.
Though I can’t be there today due to my own struggles with mental health, my thoughts are with the McCann family as they say goodbye to their son, father, brother, uncle, and one of Leeds’ finest. Today should be a celebration of the joy Terry brought to so many lives, and I know he would appreciate everyone coming together in his honor.
I’ll be there in spirit today and will give my all at the November fundraiser.
Rest in Eternal Peace, Terrence McCann.
