A common mistake people make when they try to design their kitchen without professional help. It’s not about style, it’s about space.

Our kitchen designer Craig, sees it all the time. Fridge doors that can’t open fully. Dishwashers that block the sink when the door is down. Drawers that seem fine on paper until you’re actually standing in the room.

The details that catch people out are nearly always the same: tolerances. How much clearance a door actually needs. Whether you can stand at the sink with the dishwasher open. Whether the fridge drawer pulls out without hitting the island.

It’s the kind of thing that only becomes obvious once the kitchen is in and by then, it’s an expensive fix.

Trends come and go. Good design stays.

Our designer Craig spoke to SoGlos about how kitchen layouts have evolved, from the gloss white and American fridge freezer days to today’s taller cupboards and pared-back finishes.

Some classics, like the shaker door, stand the test of time. Others, like plinth lighting in a house with kids and dogs, sound better in theory than they look in practice.
