Auf Wiedersehen 🎶

08/06/2026

A Different Kind of Farewell 🎶🇨🇭

Most collectors expect to find the familiar name Reuge inside a Swiss chalet music box. This one is different.

It may not be the finest or most valuable example and it hasn’t undergone a full restoration just a gentle cleaning of the movement and interior. The years are still visible in the wood, the mechanism and the little signs of a life well lived.
Sometimes the brief is to make it sing again whilst retaining its aged look and antique appearance.

Today it’s playing “Auf Wiedersehen” “until we meet again.” A fitting melody for a piece that has likely accompanied countless farewells, celebrations, memories and quiet moments over the years.

What makes a music box special isn’t always its maker, rarity or condition. Sometimes it’s simply the fact that it meant the world to somebody. Someone wound this little chalet, listened to this tune and treasured it enough for it to survive all these years.

Old Hundredth: The Melody Behind the Doxology

Extra information:

The “Old Hundredth” (or Old 100th) is one of the most famous melodies in Christian hymnody, widely attributed to French composer Louis Bourgeois for the 1551 Genevan Psalter.

Originally set to Psalm 134, the tune earned its current name after the 1696 publication of the New Version of the Psalms to distinguish it from newer compositions.
In 1561, Scottish clergyman William Kethe translated the iconic English text, "All People That on Earth Do Dwell," which cemented the melody’s association with Psalm 100.

Beyond this psalm, the melody is universally recognized across Christian denominations as the setting for the Doxology ("Praise God, from Whom All Blessings Flow"), written by Thomas Ken in 1674.

The historic tune reached a pinnacle of ceremonial grandeur when English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams arranged it for the 1953 Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II at Westminster Abbey.

His brilliant arrangement was specifically designed to unite the massive congregation, full orchestra, and church choir alongside dramatic, resounding brass fanfares.

Today, sheet music scores for this celebrated SATB choir and brass version remain widely available through major music publishers.
