How should a place make people feel?

Design is a deeply personal process, yet it is also highly collaborative. Every project is shaped by conversations, ideas, constraints, ambitions and countless decisions along the way.

One of the questions we often return to is how a place should make people feel.

This question shaped our proposals for Yateley Lakes Hotel and Spa.

The ambition was never simply to create a building within a landscape, but a place where architecture, water, planting, light and nature work together to create an atmosphere of wellbeing.

Conceived as a series of planted terraces cascading towards the Blackwater River, the building dissolves into its setting. Not a single object, but a sequence of green layers woven into the site.
A place to slow down. To reconnect with nature. To step away from the demands of everyday life.

Every design decision followed from that idea.

This is the second of two new dwellings granted planning permission in Claygate, Surrey.

Positioned at the front of the site, the proposal replaces a much smaller existing dwelling with a new home of approximately 650 sqm as part of a wider redevelopment strategy.

The architectural approach focused on creating a balanced and well proportioned frontage, using symmetry, strong hierarchy and carefully controlled detailing to give the house a sense of permanence and presence within the street scene. The scale of the dwelling was carefully managed through composition and proportion to ensure it sits comfortably within its setting despite the significant increase in accommodation.

Projects such as this demonstrate how planning strategy and architectural thinking can work together to unlock the potential of established residential plots.

This is one of two new dwellings granted planning permission in Claygate, Surrey.

Positioned within the former rear garden, the proposal forms part of a wider backland redevelopment strategy replacing a single existing dwelling with two substantially larger homes.

The architectural approach focused on proportion, symmetry and carefully considered positioning within the site, creating a home that sits comfortably within its setting while responding to the character of the surrounding area.

Projects such as this demonstrate how planning strategy and architectural thinking can unlock the potential of underutilised plots within established residential locations.

The new HALO Architects website is now live.

It brings together a selection of projects from across the studio and offers a clearer picture of how we work.

Many of our projects begin with understanding the particular conditions of a site, from planning policy and landscape to the surrounding context and the ambitions of the client. From there the design gradually takes shape.

The website shares some of these projects and gives an insight into how we approach architecture and the potential of different sites.
