Two of the CLECO team have been out starting the 5-year maintenance phase on one of our woodland creation sites in Cheshire.

A big advantage of planting a woodland we go on to maintain is making sure the layout works long-term. The time spent marking out really pays off now — consistent row spacing means efficient, clean passes.

Running two .spa side by side, it keeps things simple:
• Straight runs
• Minimal overlap
• Reduced fuel use and emissions

Small details, but they add up — and it’s something we actively think about.

Speaking of thinking beyond the basics…
Before any mowing starts, we check for ground-nesting birds and mammals. If anything’s present, we avoid the area — simple as that.

It’s not something we’re paid to do, but a bit of care and awareness makes all the difference.

Always happy to go a step further — especially when it benefits the wildlife these sites support.

All part of taking a considered approach to woodland creation and aftercare — not just getting the job done, but getting it done right.

Got a spare 60 seconds?
Take a fly-over of one of our woodland creation projects here in Cheshire.

34 hectares. 37,000 native, broadleaf and coniferous trees.

We’re now entering the initial five-year maintenance phase, ensuring the woodland gets the very best start and delivers real, lasting value for people, nature and climate.

To round off this year’s tree planting season we implemented a Miyawaki-style planting scheme as part of wider Natural Flood Management works.

The planting focused on wetland tree species adapted to waterlogged conditions, reflecting the hydrology of the site.

Planted densely, the idea is to create a living barrier that helps slow and disperse water flowing through a narrow channel.

It’s a bit experimental on this site — but that’s part of the interest. It’ll be great to come back in a few years and see how it performs.

And yes… at points during planting we were quite literally knee-deep in nature-based solutions.

Earlier this winter some of Team CLECO installed willow spiling as part of a natural flood management scheme.

Traditionally used to stabilise riverbanks, this specification was slightly different; instead of installing along the bank we worked across the watercourse, working in conjunction with existing leaky dams.

Living willow stakes were driven vertically into and across the channel bed, with the rods inserted into the banks - where they will take root - and woven between the stakes, to form a connected, permeable barrier.

Integrated with the leaky dams, the structure is designed to slow the flow of water during high-flow events - helping to reduce downstream flooding, trap sediment and improve water quality over time.

We’ll be revisiting the site in summer to see the structures in leaf and very much alive — where they’ve hopefully continued to root, grow and create valuable habitat for wildlife.

A brilliant example of practical, nature-based solutions doing exactly what they’re meant to do.

Team CLECO have moved onto a smaller woodland creation project on the Welsh–English border, planted with native species to increase biodiversity and connect fragmented woodlands. 🌳

A more compact scheme (around 12,500 trees), but it packs a punch — featuring Miyawaki planting and natural flood management works, including riparian planting, scrapes, leaky dams and willow spiling - which we’ll be carrying out next week.

Root and stem… getting to grips with some serious rhododendron clearance.

Phase 1 of a pond restoration project in Cheshire.

Once the area is clear and we can see the lay of the land (or lack of it, because it’s a blooming pond!) we’ll begin restoration, utilising site won materials and create some lovely habitat.

It’s been a busy summer for the team!

With the heatwaves rolling in, Hol’s been hard at work: restocking our living walls, mulching beds, and adjusting cut frequencies to help public green spaces stay healthy, vibrant, and green.

We’ve been busy in Binley…verge mowing along the carriageway and rotation cuts in species-rich grassland kept on our toes.

It’s been a nice surprise to see just how much scabious is flourishing in some of the toughest spots near the balancing ponds.

Interesting how it thrives there, while similar plants at home barely last a week without watering!
