DBCP is deeply saddened by the devastating fire that has resulted in the loss of a historic and much‑loved building in Leek.

Over a four‑day period, three senior DBCP building inspectors, supported by a structural engineer, were on site supporting the emergency response at The Big Mill. During this time, they witnessed the spontaneous collapse of the rear wall of the six‑storey structure.

With no remaining supporting elements, no walls, no roof, floors, and residential properties in close proximity, the building presented a significant and immediate risk to the public. On this basis, the difficult decision was taken to reduce the height of the building.

Public safety always has to be the overriding priority. In circumstances where a building becomes unstable and hazardous, and no safe alternative exists, demolition is the only responsible course of action.

This is a major loss for the town and its heritage. It is never easy to see a historic building disappear, but protecting the public must come first.

Experts say more needs to be done to preserve "vital" historical buildings for communities.

🙌 Celebrating National Apprenticeship Week 🙌

At DBCP, apprentices aren’t just part of our team... They are the future of building control.

We’re incredibly proud of the apprenticeship programme we’ve built, creating real opportunities to learn on the job, in the real world. From day one, our apprentices are out on site, gaining hands-on experience, supported by experienced surveyors and backed by structured academic learning.

Seeing our apprentices grow in confidence, capability and professionalism is one of our greatest achievements as a team. Their success is a reflection of the mentors, trainers and colleagues who invest time every day to share their experience.

Here’s to our apprentices and to continuing to shape the future of building control together. 🏗️
