What a season it’s been for FC Kennett.
Promotion sealed in proper style with a 4-0 win over Wisbech St Mary B, and let’s be honest, that one felt extra sweet after they’d done us twice earlier in the season. Cup and league, they had our number… until our final game, where it felt like all our hard work finally showed on the pitch.
Pre-season set the tone in its own way… starting with a pub bike crawl probably says everything you need to know about this group. From there, it’s been a proper graft.
Over the whole year, it’s been a solid shift from everyone. Our only losses coming against Wisbech St Mary B and Mepal & Sutton says it all really. Week in, week out the lads turned up, put a shift in, and more often than not got the job done. No fancy stuff, just hard work and sticking together.
The cups didn’t quite go our way, both ending in tough penalty shootout losses - including a freezing cold day away at Wisbech that won’t be forgotten in a hurry. But if anything, those moments just added to the character of the side.
What sums it up best is how the team bounced back. Those earlier losses could’ve knocked confidence, but instead it just seemed to fire everyone up. By the time we played Wisbech again, it was a completely different story. Sharper, more organised, and clinical when it counted.
From the gaffer’s side of things, it’s been brilliant to see a group of mates, some of whom have been playing together for years, come together and really bond as a team. That togetherness has shown on and off the pitch, and the social side has been just as strong as the football.
It’s also been a big year for the club off the pitch, with the introduction of a reserve team, something everyone should be proud of as the club continues to grow.
This wasn’t about one big moment though. It’s been built over the whole season, training nights, rainy away days, ropey pitches, and everyone mucking in. Players, management, and everyone around the club have all had a part to play… even if the standard of refereeing has tested the patience a few times along the way.
A massive thank you also has to go to our 20 sponsors this season. Honestly, without their generosity, none of this would be possible. From helping with kits and equipment to just backing the club week in, week out - it makes a huge difference and doesn’t go unnoticed.
And finally, a big shout to the fans. Whether it was home or away, good weather or freezing cold, you’ve shown up consistently and backed the lads all the way. It genuinely makes a difference.
At the end of the day, promotion’s deserved. Went right down to the wire, but we got it done.
Now it’s onto next season… tougher games, better sides, but if this year’s anything to go by, Kennett will be right up for it.
Up the Kennett.
