Fawlty Towers ignored every rule of TV comedy at the time. The lead wasn’t lovable, the tone was dark, and the plots spiraled into panic rather than neat resolutions.

And yet, it worked — brilliantly. Because the writers didn’t follow formulas. They followed what was funny.

That’s why the show still feels alive. It’s unpredictable, chaotic, and defiant. In a world full of scripted niceness, it’s refreshing to watch something that broke all the rules — and made better ones in the process.
