Back at Louise and Sean’s finished garden in Esher, Surrey.

Two things in this one. The silver birch and the irrigation.

Silver birch (Betula utilis var. jacquemontii) is one of the most popular choices with garden designers for good reason. Light canopy, dappled shade, white bark that looks striking year round, catkins in early spring and that lush green leaf in spring and summer. It gives you presence without weight.

And the irrigation. During the landscaping phase this garden was completely waterlogged. Now in the heat and wind we’ve been having, the irrigation is doing exactly what it was designed to do. No labour of love every evening with a hose. Just a timer, a moisture check, and the confidence that freshly planted plants are being looked after 🌿

Where does a passion for garden design come from?

For me, it started young. My family moved house around eight times growing up (and many more since). Every garden was a project.

My parents had a natural eye for mixing old and new, modern extensions on thatch cottages, stepping stones across ponds.

I saw the construction process happen in real time, regularly, on many different properties.

It just rubbed off.

This is what a blank canvas looks like when the house is still covered in scaffolding.

A coastal property in West Wittering, West Sussex, sitting right on the water’s edge.

The brief was to design the whole plot from scratch around how the family wanted to live.

Pool with resistance feature alongside a sauna and hot tub. Fire pit terrace and dining area connecting directly to the boat house. Gravel driveway with a specimen olive tree as the centrepiece. Gabion wall stepping down to the beach. Country coastal planting throughout, roses, lavender and tamarisk, designed to work in the salt air.

Back at Louise’s finished garden in Esher, Surrey.

This clip is all about the planting. The centrepiece is a gnarled ancient olive tree, positioned between the main terrace and the pergola terrace. A wise call by the client to go with that size.

The rest of the scheme is layered with evergreens, Mexican feather grasses, and pops of purple and white. A classic Mediterranean palette that works year-round once established.

The multi-stem silver birch adds a second focal point. Striking white bark, deciduous, dappled shade, and a completely different texture to everything around it 🌿

We designed this large family garden on the Crown Estate in Oxshott, Surrey from scratch.

Upper terrace with a large pergola, outdoor kitchen, TV and dining for twelve. Freestanding fireplace with a seating wall. Water feature and fire bowl on the lower terrace. Sweeping lawn with layered planting throughout.

The materials were all specified and sourced through our showroom, which is part of our full design service.

Seeing them on site looking exactly as envisioned by our design team is always the moment it all clicks 🌿

We’re back at Louise’s in Esher, Surrey. The garden is finished, the landscapers are out, and it’s fully snagged.

Louise first contacted us two years before the build started. Internal works, life getting in the way. We kept the door open and when she came back with fresh ideas it picked up exactly where we left off.

The build was a long arduous winter on a challenging sloped site, but between our team, the contractor and Louise being hands-on throughout, it was a smooth process.

The standout moment was the studio. A fag packet sketch of what she had in her head, and Tess turned it into something completely bespoke.

“It was a happy marriage.” 🌿

Another walk through of Sean and Louise’s garden in Esher, Surrey.

The main feature of the whole garden is the water feature. Made to measure, all materials designed to tie in with the full garden palette. Subtle sound, not too noisy, especially when you’re back on the dining terrace.

The rest of the material palette is that timeless beige tone that most clients come to us looking for. The key is contrast of texture and form while keeping the colour palette tight. Walling complementing the stone stackers, Italian porcelain tying in with the gravel.

The details are what make the difference 🌿

A concept design in Cobham, Surrey.

The clients had recently finished a beautiful interior renovation and wanted the garden to finally match. Contemporary, sophisticated, and designed to work as hard as the house.

The brief covered a lot of ground. A 990 square metre north-facing plot with an existing pool at its centre, a portico terrace running the full width of the rear elevation, and a garden full of mature trees and structure that just needed bringing together properly.

The design adds an upper seating terrace with a firepit, an outdoor kitchen under a pergola structure, a garden studio, new pool coping with planting around the pool to give it seasonal interest through winter, and a full replanting scheme that’s impressive but manageable.

The front drive and entrance are also redesigned as part of the overall scheme.
