What an interesting visit last week for an initial condition fabric survey of a series of barns. Always love seeing the historic details of these structures and a prominent was an exciting find.

Carpenters’ marks were created with a race knife and used as tags to distinguish various elements of a timber frame and how the entire ensemble should be pieced together. Here you can see the head carpenter initials, apprentice initials and then the year it was built – it's tradition even today for carpenters to mark timber frames in this way. It is not only a maker's mark, but also a really helpful way to date the building. Historically, they’d also do it if they were to replace a significant part of the frame, which would then date that part too and give you a history of repairs!

Pleased that we have managed to navigate a complicated planning process for this double application. It consists of a G2 listed cottage on the end of a Georgian farmstead, with an adjacent agricultural building.

One permission is to remove a late extension, replacing it with a light and airy open plan kitchen and living space. The other is an outbuilding conversion for which we’re excited to have successfully proved once had a larger roof form. Doubling the height will give our clients a new mezzanine with guest suite. We can’t wait to see the plans come to fruition.
