One from the vaults: Designed and produced for a private residence in the Cotswolds, this is one of the first commissions we produced after moving to new premises back in 2021. Minimalist in its simplicity, we let the beauty of the mouth-blown cylinder glass shine and do the heavy lifting on this one.

"Here, heavy storm-clouds,ill-will brewed,
over fields, fells, farms, blighted woods.
On the wind’s breath, curse of crow and rook."

A small panel of hand painted and kiln fired stained glass inspired by one of 10 cast iron tercet waymarkers commemorating the 400th Anniversary of The Pendle Witch Trials.

Designed by Stephen Raw, and featuring a verse of poetry by former Poet Laurate Carol Ann Duffy, the markers can be found along a 51 mile route stretching from Pendle Hill to Lancaster.

This verse comes from Waymarker #3.
Dedicated to Alizon Device, Waymarker 3 can be found at local beauty spot, picnic site and ancient woodland "Spring Wood".

WIP: The Cast of Characters for the Malham Commission are coming along nicely. Hand painted and kiln fired right here in our Clitheroe studio. This lot (peregrine falcon, barn owl, pheasant, blue tit, wren, robin, blackbird, and curlew) are all regularly seen in and around our clients garden.

A great day out yesterday: We took a little fieldtrip up the road to meet our friend Pete McNaught at Cumbria Stained Glass who took us to view some lovely glass in and around Sedbergh and Westmorland. Among these were works by Whitefriars (James Powell & Sons), Shrigley & Hunt and works attributed to William Morris & Co (though we're not absolutely certain of this).

The trip was crowned by visiting the small church of St. Gregory, Marthwaite in the excellently named Vale of Lune. Now pastorally redundant and in the care of The Churches Conservation Trust, it is home to a beautiful Arts & Crafts masterpiece entitled "PEACE" which though viewed many times online (like all stained glass) really has to be seen up close and in person to be fully appreciated.

One of our current projects on the bench is this early 20th Century figurative stained glass window from St. Mary's Church, Penwortham dating to around 1901 and believed to be attributed to the studio of Shrigley & Hunt of Lancaster.

Unfortunately the central light has suffered major damage due to vandalism and is now in for restoration & conservation works.

Among the many processes that will be involved in returning this beautiful window back to its former glory, our first was to sift through the bucket of shattered pieces and shards we were handed by the church. This has allowed us to determine what pieces if any remained intact (miraculously there are a few) and to piece back together those fragments we were able to. These will form the basis of shapes and detail from which we will then be able to cut and re-paint new replacements.

The work is painstaking and on occasion frustrating but that makes it all the more worthwhile. We'll continue posting as our work progresses.

Images show site photo's of the window pre-damage, post damage, post removal and down on the studio lightbox following several days of "Investigative Jigsawing".

Well we've hit the ground running here at Lightworks in 2026 with some really interesting and challenging projects on the studio benches. Now into our 28th year in business - here's a history of the company and how it came to be.
