Are draining grooves a good idea on your worktop? A question we get asked all the time!
In the past draining grooves were the standard as part of the worktop fitting process. Since then a lot has changed.
Draining grooves in a kitchen worktop offer the advantage of efficiently channelling water directly into the sink, preventing it from pooling on the surface and potentially causing damage or hygiene issues. They eliminate the need for a separate draining board, freeing up valuable counter space and contributing to a cleaner, more streamlined look.
Additionally, they can enhance the aesthetic appeal of the worktop, adding a touch of bespoke craftsmanship and more appealing to the eye.
However, draining grooves also come with certain drawbacks. They require more meticulous cleaning to prevent the buildup of dirt and debris. If you live in a really hard water area, limescale can be a big issue. Depending on the material, they also might be more prone to staining if not properly maintained.
Furthermore, adding drain grooves increases the cost of the worktop due to the extra fabrication involved. Ultimately, the decision to include draining grooves depends on individual needs, aesthetic preferences, and willingness to undertake the required maintenance.
Whilst a recessed drainer can be helpful for containing water, a lack of slope will still require you to use a sponge or cloth to mop up the water.
