One of those Saturdays. Helping an overseas landlord who needed some fetch and carry along with those pesky little bits: new microwave, new mattress protectors, checking the electrics and changing broken bed slats…..

And fixing a broken table leg!

Painting the very high lounge on Monday!

Day Four: I’m pleased the cricket is on, even though we are being battered, as this is going to be a late one!

My retail Harris Extension Pole, that I nicked off my Dad, has finally given up the Ghost. Back over to my Purdy Pro!!

First coat completed and we’ve taken 4 wickets! Get in!

Sealing or re-sealing baths is something I do a lot of…. You need a sharp metal scraper (don’t crack those tiles!), a decent sealant and most importantly Multisolve…..

And then again I go with the fantastic CT 1!!

Day 3. Trying out some new caulk….. these two are excellent. Everyone raves understandably about HB 42 but Soudal products seem fine to me. The Johnstone’s Trade Aqua Guard Primer has cured perfectly, after the caulk drying I may get the top coat done ahead of time!

Painting this 3 metre Hall ceiling was a doddle. I have a Purdy Pro pole that would go over 4m but it’s pretty irrelevant without the correct roller. I always use a Purdy Colossus for ceilings….. it’s just the best.

I’ll be using mirrored type mini rollers for with the ceilings or walls, with Purdy’s excellent Soft Dove roller for the walls. Gives a smoother finish.

Outside of these pro tools I’m pretty easy going with my brushes, using a Harris cut in brush here.

There is no way that I will ever be paying £30 for a Purdy Pro brush, no matter how much I rate their rollers!

Day 2: Sand down the wood and obtain a key. Fill any pesky holes in the walls and ceilings.

Luckily here the whole property is in a decent condition.

I’m old school and have always used oil based paints for wood. On this job I am using water based Johnstone’s Trade Aqua Guard primer and top coat. I’ve just used the primer and it’s superb.

I always recommend Johnstone’s Trade paints especially Covaplus but I think I’m converting to their wood solutions! It’s difficult as I found Dulux Trade Diamond Satinwood to be a fantastic paint….. but Johnstone’s Trade is slightly cheaper…. And looking comparable without the dodgy smell and far better clean up!

I’m also very happy to recommend B and Q’s own brand vinyl emulsion. This one is £36 per 10 litres, with a cheaper version at £24. It’s an excellent paint. Not Johnstone’s Trade Ultra Flat white or Tikkurila Anti-Refex paint but it’s a fraction of the cost and excellent.

Day One: Rule number one, always ensure you leave a property in a better state.

I use various protection. Plastic sheets are great for fitted wardrobes and kitchen units. Old school dust sheets are really versatile and useful for furniture. Plastic backed dust sheets help if you are a little messy. Either way splatter from ceilings is minimised.

A Purdy Colossus roller is a must for high ceilings. It holds more paint than any other roller and massively reduces splatter.

Q1 hard floor protection is brilliant. Well worth the additional cost. Hard-waring enough to cope with all those ladder moves…..

And finally we have masking tape. I always like wide tape. I use low tack tape sometimes for painting, however for fixing to hard surfaces like floors and carpet you can’t beat masking tape. Don’t buy cheap!

Curtains, blinds, lamp shades down. Either protect electrical fittings or loosen for finish.

Redecorating a loft apartment with 3 metre ceilings.

Luckily I have designated parking which makes a massive difference when moving tools and materials.

Ceilings, walls and woodwork….. should be fun!

Why are blinds so flimsy!!!!!!
