Material Provenance - Part 1

This week we're looking at limestone and just how many ways it can be used across a building.

From flooring to walling to tiling, limestone has been a mainstay of British architecture for centuries. It's prized for being relatively easy to work when first quarried, then hardening with age and weathering. What you're seeing here is the same stone, cut and finished differently depending on its job.

Details in focus - Part 1

This week we're sharing a hand drawing of a new composite column.

The composite order is the most elaborate of the classical orders. It brings together the acanthus leaf detailing of Corinthian with the scrolled volutes of Ionic. Drawing it correctly takes time: every part of the column is proportioned in relation to its diameter, following rules that go back to the classical treatises.

At one of our ongoing projects, we've been working with a quantity of reclaimed timbers, some bearing the twists and surface cracking that only come from decades of seasoning and structural life. Rather than replace them, our approach has been to retain and rejuvenate, cutting back to sound material, addressing decay where present, and reworking sections back into use within the new structure.

Durability is not just about specifying the right materials new; it's about knowing which existing materials are still worth their place.

Recently completed: a bespoke oak library at one of our ongoing projects in Oxford.

The joinery wraps the full height of the room, with fitted shelving, integrated lighting and a concealed media unit built into the run. Every element was designed and detailed in-house before being made by hand.

Changes at Quinlan Terry Architects LLP.

Following the retirement of Quinlan Terry CBE as Senior Partner, the practice enters a new chapter under the leadership of Roger Barrell, who has worked in the office for over 40 years and has managed the practice since 2017. Now leading the design and delivery of the practice's work from Dedham with the established team.

Quinlan Terry will continue his association with the practise as a consultant, advising on classical architectural principles.

Raymond Erith passed his knowledge and understanding of classical architecture to Roger's father, Hugh Barrell and then to Quinlan Terry, so the practice continues that tradition today. This new chapter reflects the enduring continuity of the office, where the principles, teaching and craftsmanship that have defined the practice for generations continue to guide our work into the future.
