We use a wide selection of different chainsaws at Roman River. Each is suited to specific tasks.

Our regular climbing saws are the Stihl MS150's. Weighing only 2.6kg they are light enough to hang on our harnesses all day without being a hindrance, and can comfortably be held at arm's length while cutting to keep the dangerous part of the saw as far from the user as is practical.

Chainsaws have come on hugely over the years and these lightweight saws can comfortably cut through branches almost a foot thick even in hard woods.

A lot of the work we take on at Roman River Tree's is safety related.

Sometimes it's huge tree's hanging over busy roads, but often its much more mundane jobs that still need keeping up with.

This Cherry took pride of place in the centre of a childrens playground in Rowhedge. It provides shelter and and greenery to the area, but it had naturally built up a lot of small deadwood over the years. While this is unlikely to cause serious harm, it could still injure a child underneath, or just cause trip hazards laying on the floor.

So our arborists cleared out anything that looked dead or dangerous, as well as checked the tree for any rubbing branches that may deteriorate over time, and gave the general health of the tree a once over.

We use friction devices to ascend and descend on our rope systems.

These vary hugely in design, from a simple piece of rope tied as a prussik loop, to more modern mechanical devices like this Petzl Zigzag..

As the climber ascends the tree, the friction hitch grips the rope, preventing it from sliding freely.
When the climber is ready to descend, they can loosen the tension on the friction hitch, allowing the rope to slide through the hitch smoothly. By carefully managing the friction, the climber can control the speed of their descent.

Not the most exciting bit of gear we use, but a staple that comes with us to every job!

Our insulated loppers clip together to make working at a huge range of heights manageable, and let us cut and pull everything from tiny twigs to foot-thick branches.

If it means we don't have to climb a tree it makes our job safer, and saves you time and money!

Established in 1973, National Tree Week marks its 50th anniversary this year.
The initiative can be traced back to the nationwide response to the Dutch Elm Disease crisis in the 1960s, which led to the devastation of millions of trees.

In response, communities throughout the UK rallied to address the depleted tree landscape, participating in the pioneering Plant a Tree in '73 initiative. Following the success of this campaign, The Tree Council was established, and two years later, the inaugural National Tree Week was held.

Fast forward 50 years, and we are once again confronted with a significant threat to our trees in the form of ash dieback. To mitigate the impact on our landscapes and communities, it is more crucial than ever to cultivate more trees in our parks, streets, woods, and green spaces.

Across the country, tree-planting activities and workshops are being organised by schools, community groups and dedicated volunteer Tree Wardens. Information about these events can be found on The Tree Council's interactive 'Near You' map. Additionally, the website provides tips for hosting an event and a downloadable poster to promote participation.

Quiz Time!

Today is American Thanksgiving Day, a celebration of the first successful harvest after the Pilgrims left Plymouth in England in 1620, to arrive in Plymouth in Massachusetts. A crazy coincidence for sure.

They travelled on the Mayflower but can you guess which native British tree was used for the bulk of the ship's construction?

We've given you a look at the bark for a clue. Put your answers in the comments below!
