The things you have to do to work in Chester city centre these days! 😅

Being a company that prides ourselves on doing things properly, this one hurts slightly. The image it portrays burns inside! 😂

Over the last two weeks, between us on this job alone, we must have collected around 15 parking tickets. Some of the lads even ended up paying their own. 🤦🏻‍♂️

We learned the hard way on day one. We purchased a dispensation permit for £30 so we could park legally… only to receive a parking ticket after 10:30 anyway. An expensive little learning curve that one! 😂

We’re not looking for sympathy—we knew the rules when we parked there—but it does make you wonder whether the system is helping or hindering the businesses that keep the city centre ticking over.

For city centre businesses already dealing with high overheads and business rates, it could ultimately mean paying more for routine maintenance, repairs and improvements. That’s not great for anyone.

What’s your take? Fair enough, or does Chester need a better solution for trades working in the city centre? 🤔

FIX Radio sticker officially has a home now 😂👌🏼

Made up we’ve finally found somewhere for the sticker we got from doing the Fix Radio Tealay for The Bald Builders. Could only go on one thing really… the mixer 😂

And honestly… we’re still absolutely loving this battery operated mixer. No leads, no hunting for power, just grab it and go. It’s been spot on 👌🏼

If anyone’s in the market for a mixer, we’d highly recommend one of these!

2 hours of graft… squeezed in to 5 minutes 40 seconds 😂👌🏼

For anyone wondering what Super Trowel actually is… it’s basically the bricklaying equivalent of a sprint race. You’ve got 1 hour to build a full competition wall to a strict spec, while judges check everything from gauge, plumb, level, dimensions, jointing and overall finish. Every tiny mistake means deductions, so it’s not just about speed — it’s about accuracy under pressure too.

The top bricklayers from across the region compete for a place in the national final at the end of July, so the standard is seriously high!

We ended up finishing 3rd overall. After the dust has settled, we’re honestly buzzing with that result on our first crack at it… but at the same time it hurts a bit knowing just how close we were to qualifying for the final 😩

We had a 20 brick deduction on gauge because our wall finished slightly high. Looking back, we think a big reason for that was all of our practice had been with perforated bricks, whereas the competition bricks were solid — something so small but it changes the game massively when you’re laying at speed.

Then came the painful one… we lost another 25 bricks on the front elevation because of ONE slightly wonky brick 😂😭

It’s 4 courses down and about 3 bricks in, marked with the yellow “L” in the video/photo… decide for yourselves 👀😂

That’s competition though! Fine margins, pressure, and lessons learned. Massive experience for us both and one thing is guaranteed…

Official score cards are out… and drum roll… we finished 3rd. 💔

Absolutely gutted if we’re honest.

We had a 20 brick deduction for being a few millimetres high on the gauge, plus another deduction for one brick being a whisker over the allowance. In the end, we missed qualification by just 13 bricks.

That one stings.

We also had the corner blocks playing tricks on us all day — one set fell off, then another came loose — so it definitely wasn’t plain sailing out there. But that’s competition bricklaying. Fine margins and pressure.

The hardest bit? I genuinely thought we had it in the bag on our first attempt. 😂

Still… to finish 3rd in our first ever regional against some serious bricklayers is something we’re proud of. It’s all one big learning curve and one thing’s for sure…

We’ll be back stronger next time round. 👊🏼🧱

SUPERTROWEL day is finally here!! 🧱🔥 Super Trowel supertrowel_official

We’ve spent the night down in South Wales and now it’s time to get stuck in!

After our practice runs at Coleg Cambria, we’re ready for the real deal 💪🏼

We’ll post the livestream link later on today for anyone wanting to tune in and watch the chaos unfold 👀😂

Saturday morning, we had the lads from Niche Energy Solutions in to pump the screed floor in for us 👌🏼

Due to the elevated position of the extension, this was the only viable way to get the job done properly. Sometimes you’ve just got to bring in the right gear and the right people!

Whilst I was stood there twiddling my thumbs, I thought I’d throw a little reel together 😂

Fair play to the lads, they absolutely flew through it and left us with a lovely finish ready for the next stages 👏🏼

Not every Saturday is glamorous in the building game… but watching a floor go from insulation boards to a smooth screed in a couple of hours is still strangely satisfying 😅

One for the diary 👀🧱

In just over a week’s time, we’ll be competing in the Welsh regional heats for the UK’s biggest bricklaying competition… Super Trowel supertrowel_official!

For anyone who hasn’t heard of it, SuperTrowel is basically bricklaying against the clock. You get one hour to lay as many bricks as possible, whilst still staying within the competition tolerances for line, level, gauge and finish. Speed means nothing if the judges start docking points 👀😂

We’ve been lucky enough to use Coleg Cambria coleg_cambriaColeg Cambria as our home for practice recently, and honestly the facilities are top notch. Massive thanks to the college for letting us use the bays, and it’s been good to meet some of the students whilst we’ve been there too 👌🏼

This was actually our final practice run there, as the college is now getting booked up for — another brilliant competition for the up-and-coming students to show off their skills and put themselves to the test 👏🏼🧱

The top 2 from the Welsh regional qualify for the national finals on Friday 31st July & Saturday 1st August… and whilst we don’t want to get ahead of ourselves, I think we might need to blank those dates out in the diary just in case 😂🤞🏼

Before anyone zooms in… no, these practice walls aren’t our usual “showroom finish” standard 🤣 They’re built to the tolerances set out by the competition. When you’re chasing speed and accuracy together, it’s a completely different game to normal site work!
