What type of dog water bowl do you use? 🐶💧

The dog water bowl has previously been identified as the third most contaminated🦠 item within the household and can be a breeding ground for dangerous germs & life-threatening bacteria🧫 that can put the entire house at risk, researchers at University Centre Hartpury have revealed.

So, which dish is best to use for a dog water bowl? The bowl that grows the least amount of life-threatening bacteria!

In the first study of its’ kind, Hartpury scientists found stainless steel grew the least amount of bacteria and over time, plastic bowls grew the highest amount, but the shocking part was the most harmful bacterial species (including salmonella, E. coli and MRSA) were most frequently identified in CERAMIC bowls!

Lead can also be a problem when using ceramic bowls, and the endocrine disrupting chemicals found in plastic bowls are a no-go! Also be aware plastic bowls🥣 can cause Plastic Dish Nasal Dermatitis🙀: Chemicals in plastic absorb through the skin and inhibit the synthesis of melanin, leaving the nose👃🏼 and adjacent areas with pink blotches.

So stainless steel🍴 bowls are the safest, right?

Well not so fast…. there’s even been recalls on stainless bowls😫. In our upcoming The Forever Dog book, in the chapter titled Environmental Impact and the section labelled “Toxic Toys, Chews, and Beds", we cover how to choose the best chemical-free bowls🚫 that won’t leach contaminants over time. You’re on a walk and you see a dog on a lead. Your dog is running free.

Q: What should you do next?
(Cue *who wants to be a millionaire* music).

Is it:
A: put your dog on a lead
B. Let your dog run over and say hello.
C: Shout “Don’t worry, he’s friendly.”
Or
D: What dog? You were playing candy crush.

The answer is…. A.

Did you get it right?

Many dog owners don’t. They don’t understand what a negatively life-altering situation a rogue dog can be for on-lead walkers.

Here’s why:

Dogs you don’t know could be on lead for 100s of reasons.

They could be blind.
They could be recovering from surgery.
They could be deaf.
They could be aggressive.
They might be scared of being approached by strangers.
They might be training.
They could be a service dog.
They may be a rescue.
They might be terrified of dogs they don’t know.
They could be elderly or physically vulnerable.
They might simply prefer to walk on lead.

In the end, it doesn’t matter why they are on a lead. It’s none of your business. But what is your business is CONSENT.

Leads are a little flag that say “don’t come close”.

When you see them, putting your dog on a lead is respectful. You show the other owner that you CARE about their choice and consent. It doesn’t matter if your dog has 100% perfect recall. You respect the other person and their dog enough to be courteous and kind to uphold everyone’s safety by making absolutely sure everyone is on a lead (no matter how much you trust your dog).

As a person who is often walking a dog on lead for all of many the reasons listed, I can’t tell you how my heart sings when I see someone extend this gesture to me and my pack.

Your dog has no right or business running up to ANYONE (dog or human) without clear PRIOR consent to do so.

You have a responsibility to ensure your dog is in control in a public place. Failing to recall is an offense. It counts as a dog out of control in a public place.

So Publisher #2 who rejected our idea about a dog longevity book (rooted in the latest animal science from the top longevity experts around the world) said:

“To be clear, you want to write a how-to guide to get your dog to live longer using science directly from the researchers, and you want us to publish it? And your hope is that big box stores support your book idea?”

(insert a long, awkward pause)….

Rodney and I: “Yes.”

Publisher #2: “And for people not up to speed about fresh food diets, which you explain in great detail but nevertheless…a book about how to make WHATEVER you’re feeding, including the same foods the Big Box Stores sell, better?!”

Us: “Yes.”

Publisher #2: “…A book showing pet parents what products to look out for, with research studies showing the foods, cleaning products, flea & tick products and other household products those big box stores sell as part of the problem, but request they also sell your book anyway??”

Us: “Yes.”

Publisher #2 (who said NO to our book idea): “Good luck with that…it will never happen in your lifetime.”

Dear Publisher #2: Our book is available for pre-sale at Target. 👊🏼

This is our first step in changing the health paradigm for dogs: making this information accessible to everyone.

Our aim is to get this critical info into everyone’s hands that need it. We are sorry you can’t see the epidemic of sick dogs whose owners need this information, and the depth of commitment dog lovers will go to fix their family members; they’re the people who asked for this book, and they’re pre-ordering it at Target.

Onward (and NOT with Publisher #2), we have dogs to save! 🐶🙌🏼🐾❤️
