Spring is almost here, but we are still prone to cold snaps and even occasional snow. Under the tunnel are leeks, spring cabbage and purple sprouting broccoli. What ever the time of the year, there is always still something to eat in the garden.

Early May and the garden is starting to come together. Seedlings planted a week or two ago have now established roots and are starting to rapidly develop leaves. The first harvest was of radish which tasted fresh and peppery. Next up I am guessing will be peas or broad beans, though there are some salad leaves ready now.

Holly and Ivy are my very own WWOOFers (World Wide Organic Farm volunteers). They haven't quite got the idea of 'No Dig' yet, but they are very keen to help. Especially when there are carrots around!

Finally got the first of my 'Polestar' runner beans out. Runner beans really hate the wind, hence the windbreak netting..I plan to double the amount currently in the ground as no doubt some will not make it through to produce runner pods. I will plant up the space under the trellis with trailing squash. The broad beans to the left of the picture are The Sutton variety a dwarf stocky bean.

Always delighted to see Broad Beans flowering as it means yums to come. The Sutton (dwarf) variety here as it is so windy in the garden shorter, stocky varieties do better. A few Sparkler radishes in the foreground.

When we first arrived at the garden we had to carry out a fairly dramatic thinning of sycamores and pine trees that were covering the garden. There just wasn't enough light. We have wherever we could however kept plants like bluebells and primroses in place.

Started earthing up my first and second early potatoes this week with home made compost. Earthing up prevents potatoes going green and encourages a bigger crop. Cant wait until late June/July and buttery new spuds!

The weather is on/off in Cornwall at the moment with sunshine, followed by cloud 🌧 and winds, followed by more sunshine 🌞 but the pear tree knows that summer is coming.

Got my trellis in place for this year's 'Polestar' runner beans, which are growing at a frightening place indoors and will need to be planted out in a week or two. Leave a few pods growing at the end of the season and once they are dried you can collect them and you have your seed ready for next year . The bean plants behind the trellis are Broad Beans (The Sutton -dwarf). If anyone has any more eco friendly ideas for runner bean trellis (other than bamboo) I am all ears!

Planting out a new herb garden at the moment. The Rosemary pictured was grown from a cutting and is around two years old. Propagating your own plants helps to reduce the carbon associated with garden centre bought plants and reduces costs

Annabel Dwarf French Beans just emerging. Seeds from Real Seeds. It is so windy at the Brea garden that dwarf varieties seem to work better here.
