Your car key is cracked. The buttons have stopped working. You've been meaning to sort it for months.

It's the job most people put off the longest. The shell splits, the buttons go sticky, the remote eventually stops opening the car at all. Most assume the only fix is a brand new key from the dealer at a few hundred pounds.

A Citroen C4 in Coventry this week, exactly that situation. New shell, transferred the electronics across, working again in under an hour. Cost a fraction of what the dealer would have asked.

A BMW that another locksmith might have walked away from.

Most car key work runs a standard path. Plug the tool in, talk to the car, programme the key, hand it over. Twenty minutes, done. But every now and again the standard path closes. The online programming side won't connect. The dealer says they can't help. That's when the real work starts.

This BMW in Coventry needed the deeper route. Took the module out of the car, read it properly on the bench, programmed the keys, cut the blade, put it all back together. Tested. Working. Owner drove away the same day with a set of keys that nobody else could get him.

If you've been told no by the dealer, or another locksmith has shaken their head, it's worth one more call.

It happens at the supermarket, the school run, on a Sunday afternoon when the shops are shut. Bags go in, boot slams, keys are sat in there with the shopping. Most people stand there for a minute, hoping there's a spare key hidden somewhere they've forgotten.

A BMW 3 Series locked out in Coventry, fob battery had died, and the emergency blade didn't work either. The doors had been swapped at some point and the barrel inside was from a different car, so the original key would never have fit.

Decoded the lock without damage, cut a new blade, programmed it on the spot. Back in the car in under an hour.

Got called out to a BMW 3 Series in Coventry. Owner locked out, fob battery dead, emergency blade not working either.

Turned out the doors had been swapped at some point in the car's history, and the barrel inside was from a completely different vehicle. So the owner's key would never have fit, even with a brand new battery. He had no idea, most people wouldn't.

Decoded the lock without damage, cut a new blade, programmed it on the spot. Back in the car in under an hour. No towing, no smashed windows, no dealer fees.

If your car key suddenly stops working or you've ever had a key that's been getting weaker for a while, it's worth checking before you're stranded somewhere. Always happy to take a look.

Toyota Prius in Coventry, 2010 plate. Keys locked inside, owner stood on the driveway waiting for me.

Pulled the van up, got the tools out, picked the lock, opened the door. Handed the keys back and that was it.

I know when you're locked out it feels like a crisis, but most of the time from my end these are quiet, quick jobs. No damage to the car, no drama, no surprise bill at the end. Just the right tools and a few minutes.

The only time they turn into something bigger is when someone's already had a go themselves before I get there.

Had a Skoda to unlock in Coventry this week 2016 car, keys shut inside.

People always worry when they call that it's going to cost a fortune or leave the car damaged. Usually neither.

Proper non-destructive entry tools, couple of minutes in the lock, door open. Lock still working normally after, no scratches on the paint, no broken trim. Keys back to the owner, tools packed up, onto the next one.

Nissan Juke in Coventry today, spare key made.

The owner's original key had stopped working on the remote side, still turned the ignition, still opened the doors with the blade, but the lock and unlock buttons had given up. She'd been manually locking it with the key every time for months apparently.

Cut a new one, programmed it to the car, tested both keys in the doors and the ignition. All working again.

This is one of those things most people put up with for way longer than they should. When the remote goes, it's usually the first sign the rest of the key's on its way out: buttons, transponder, the lot. Cheaper and less stressful to sort a spare now than to deal with it the morning the original properly packs in.

Audi A3 lockout in Coventry earlier. Keys dropped down inside the car somewhere, possibly under the shopping bags on the seat.

Quick tip from this one. I get asked all the time why I don't use WD40 on car locks. The reason is it attracts dust and grit, which then sits inside the lock and wears it out faster. I use GT85 instead, does the same lubricating job without leaving the residue behind.

Got the door open, owner got her keys back, no damage to the car.
