It feels a little bit too warm to be talking about Christmas, but…

After taking a little break last year for a very special reason, we’re really pleased to say that our Christmas Craft Fair will be returning for 2026 🎄

This year’s event will take place on Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd November, from 10am until 3pm and we’re now inviting applications from stallholders who would like to join us. Please apply through the link in the comments.

The deadline for applications is 30th June 2026.

Each stall will be subject to a charge, and 100% of the money raised will be donated to Age UK. This year we’re working with Amanda from their Earlsdon shop 💚

Finding plants that thrive in a hot, south-facing border can be a bit of a guessing game. These five varieties are excellent choices for adding texture and colour without needing constant attention

Dan & Kieran’s top picks:

🌿 Senecio ‘Angel Wings’: Large, velvety silver leaves that reflect the sun beautifully and create a great contrast against darker foliage.

🌿 Festuca glauca ‘Intense Blue’: A compact, mound-forming grass with a distinct metallic blue shade, perfect for adding structure to the front of a border.

🌿 Artemisia ‘Powis Castle’: Soft, feathery, silver-green foliage with a lovely cascading habit that thrives in well-drained soil.

🌿 Eryngium ‘Big Blue’ (Sea Holly): Electric blue stems and spiky flower heads that are brilliant for pollinators.

🌿 Kniphofia ‘Amazing Fun’ (Red Hot Poker): Brings a strong vertical element and a pop of warm colour.

Once these are established in well-drained soil, they are incredibly resilient 💚

We get asked a lot for plants that will give you brilliant results if you're new to gardening. Kieran has picked out 5 easy perennials we always recommend starting with:

🌸 Hardy Geraniums
Position: Full sun or partial shade
Why we love it: They form lovely mounds of foliage and produce an abundance of flowers.

🌼 Erigeron
Position: Full sun
Why we love it: They are prolific self seeders, and can tuck themselves into wall crevices. They offer a beautiful carpet of daisy-like flowers.

💜 Salvias
Position: Full sun
Why we love it: They are a magnet for bees.

🍂 Heuchera
Position: Partial shade or full sun
Why we love it: They offer year-round colour and structure in shades of lime green, deep purple, and rich caramel.

🌿 Hostas
Position: Full shade or partial shade
Why we love it: Lush, architectural foliage for those tricky shady corners of the garden.

We actually have Erigeron, Salvia, and Geraniums planted up in our display garden right now, so you can see exactly how fab they look once they're established!

If you’re looking at your garden pond and wondering how to turn it into wildlife-friendly haven, the secret is all about balancing your planting 🌿

A healthy pond relies on a team of different plants, each doing a specific job. Swipe through to see the 4 essential groups you need, but here is the quick breakdown of what’s looking fab in our new deliveries this week:

Marginal Plants: Place these in shallow areas, they keep their roots wet, but their leaves above the water. Reeds and grasses offer vital wildlife shelter, while our favourite Mimulus cupreus ‘Red Emperor’ creates a bee-friendly carpet of coppery-red flowers to soften the pond edges.

Oxygenators: The heavy lifters! They pump oxygen into the water to keep it healthy, balanced, and clear of stagnation

Deep Water & Lilies: These block out excess sunlight to naturally combat algae. Got a tiny space? Nymphaea Pygmaea ‘helvola’ is a stunning miniature lily perfect for patio bowls. Got a large pond? ‘Colorado’ is our favourite for a tropical look.

Moisture & Shade Lovers: Perfect for bog gardens and damp borders. Planting structural ferns and showy Astilbes around the perimeter will soften the edges and blend your pond into the rest of your garden

Pop in to see our display patio pond created by Gemma and Katy for inspiration 💚

Fresh stock is arriving weekly.

If you have an Acer that’s outgrown its pot, here is exactly how we repot them here at Smith’s

The compost:
When repotting an Acer, it’s best to use multi-purpose compost with added John Innes. Because this compost is loam-based, it offers much better drainage than a normal multi-purpose mix, which Acers love.

Choosing the right pot:
It’s best to use a pot that is no more than a couple of sizes bigger than the original. Acers are lightly rooted plants and can easily become overwhelmed if there is a large volume of wet compost sitting around them.

The step-by-step:
1️⃣ Line the base: Start off by putting a couple of handfuls of fresh compost to line the base of the new pot.

2️⃣ Position the plant: Next, position the Acer in the centre of the pot.

3️⃣ Fill it in: Gently fill in the gaps around the sides and firm the compost down as you go.

4️⃣ The finishing touch: To finish up, just water in the plant if required!

Now is the perfect time for a quick cleanup on your Acer to get it looking its best! ✨

Here is your quick guide to pruning your Acer this spring:

How to spot where to trim
Trace the affected stems back to where the die-back ends. You’ll easily spot the transition: the bark changes from dark or light brown and brittle to healthy, vibrant green bark that is actively producing shoots. (On the variety in this video, the new growth is a gorgeous light pinky-red! 😍)

Why prune in late spring?
It’s the ideal time because you can clearly see exactly where the new growth is starting to come through. Plus, it helps your plant maintain its beautiful shape.

✂️ The golden rule for cutting
To prevent the die-back from spreading, make your cuts slightly into the healthy tissue, just beyond the dead wood. This ensures the plant can properly seal the wound and protects it from future damage.

Keep an eye out for part 2 where we repot!

A lot of the questions we get at this time of year are about feeding.

Different plants have different needs, and using the right feed can make a real difference to flower colour (in some plants), foliage and overall performance.

Here are some of the plants we’re most commonly asked about, along with the feeds we recommend.

Save this post for later 💚
