It's National Hedgerows week.

The perfect time to celebrate a project with Restore The Thaw Landscape Project. In autumn 2023 I ran workshops in 10 schools raising awareness of the importance of trees in the landscape, we collected seeds from the trees around the school grounds, processed them and planted them. The resulting saplings were then planted out this spring by the same children.

Romilly Primary and Ysgol Y Deri planted hedges at Porthkerry park. Ysgol Y Deri also planted some trees at school and Y Bont Faen created a mini forest in their school ground.

The pupils also created little seed bomb creatures to live in the hedge to help educate them about the importance of hedges for habitat corridors, food and shelter for wildlife.

Hazel flowers

At this time of year it's hard to miss the hazel catkins fluttering in the breeze amongst the hedgerows. These are the male flowers of the hazel tree, emerging early in the season as they rely on the wind rather than insects for pollination.

But have you ever noticed the female flowers of the hazel..? these are not so obvious. They have tiny little red petals and look a bit like sea anemones sprouting from the young hazel branches. It is these tiny flowers that if pollinated will turn into the hazel nuts.

Hazel catkins are edible, they are very nutritious and have a nutty but bitter flavour when toasted. But always remember when foraging to leave enough on the tree to pollinate those lovely little female flowers.

The Mycelium network under the soil is a phenomenon that we are only just beginning to explore and understand. These networks are now known to mutually benefit the trees, they give nutrients to the trees and the trees supply them with carbon. It's also thought that these networks help the trees to communicate and support each other.

Yesterday I dug up some oak saplings and was very pleased to see white filaments of a mycorrhizal network covering the tree roots. Even in such young trees in a man made environment this natural phenomenon is at work. Healthy soil, happy trees.

It's Imbolc, the darkest 3months are behind us and spring is up ahead. The undergrowth is stirring, with shoots pushing through and snowdrops out. Trees are one of the last plants to come out of dormancy, and it's the shrub layer that emerges first to soak up some sun before the canopy of the larger trees close it out.

Traditional tree planting season is until the end of March, but the Elder in the nursery is already putting out leaves and the buds on the hazel and guilder rose are swelling.

Still plenty of trees hoping to wake up with their roots in new homes this year. Get in touch if you're thinking of planting a hedge, a shelter belt or a new woodland.

More established trees in pots also available.

Thinking of planting a new hedge? shelter belt? replacing those trees you've lost...?

Now is the perfect time to plant trees, allowing plenty of time whilst still dormant and the ground moist to bed in before the roots begin waking up in the spring...

Plenty of bare rooted saplings still available.

I was very happy with the colour and texture of the soil when I removed the side of this bed to begin lifting the Wild Cherry saplings. Dark, crumbly with plenty of humus.

Being in a woodyard and following permaculture principles my growing medium is mainly very well rotted wood chip from the site along with homemade compost, plus a bit of sand and vermiculite to help with drainage.

Here's some photo's sent to me from one of last years customers; little west. They bought trees for a tiny forest in Wick. The saplings are thriving and the success rate is over 99% even with the drought conditions this summer.
