Ahead of the Wadhurst Open Gardens this weekend (6-7th June, 2pm-6pm), we revisited Carillon Cottage in May, with a donation of Mushroom Compost and Manure for the garden.

Wadhurst Open Gardens is the main fundraising event for Carillon Cottage, when around 10 private gardens in and around Wadhurst are generously opened by their owners for visitors to enjoy. Visitors will typically tour some, or even all, of the gardens, by foot or by car, also taking in a visit to the church to enjoy tea and a sumptuous range of homemade cakes.

Jaime Grounsell started to transform the traditional cottage garden in October 2024, with extensive clearing and re-planting, before contacting us in search of some much-needed soil nourishment. The garden is looking fantastic and will be open for the event, along with a plant stall in aid of the cottage.

The volunteer-led cottage provides services to the local community such as a driving to hospital appointments, NHS hearing aid support, wheelchair hire, food bank and recycling and much more. Supporting the whole community, regardless of faith, it is managed and owned by Wadhurst Parish Council.

As we endeavour to improve our delivery versatility, we have added a smaller 7.5 tonne vehicle to our fleet.

We know how important an additional 10 feet can be when placing a heavy bulk bag exactly where customers require. This vehicle will allow us to access those hard to reach spots and hopefully save our customers some backache!

Our new driver Paul is already a hit with our client base and is getting booked up fast, so “Call for Paul!”

It’s not too late to get some onion sets in the ground!
In March we visited a regular client with a delivery of our Mushroom Compost, Ericaceous Compost and Screen Surface Woodchip.

While the ideal time for planting onions is mid-March to mid-April, they can be planted up until mid-May. Our high quality spent mushroom compost is a popular soil conditioner suitable for helping most plants to thrive while breaking up heavy clay soils. Ideal for soil improvement, mulching, growing potatoes, onions, leeks and potatoes.

Our premium Ericaceous Compost is specially formulated to create the perfect growing conditions for acid-loving plants. Ideal for Azaleas, Camellias, Heathers, Magnolias, Rhododendrons, Conifers, and Blueberries.

This client used our Screen Surface Woodchip to top up existing areas around their soft-fruit beds.

At Gardenscape, our drivers will always endeavour to make your delivery as smooth as possible, whether that’s by lifting the bags over a hedge, fence or garden wall, multiple drops around your property, or splitting the bags exactly where required.

In this case, a regular client requested the bags be split straight into several storage bays, to save the garden team a large job of filling the bays by hand.

Clinton Lodge Gardens are usually open to the public just once a year, as part of the National Garden Scheme - “The garden is of about six acres divided by hedges into smaller gardens reflecting periods of English Garden design. Starting with a small knot garden, an Elizabethan herb garden with camomile paths and turf seats, a potager, wild flower meadow, a pre-Raphaelite alley of white wisteria, clematis and lilies, broad double borders of white and blue, the enclosed garden of old roses trained at nose height so that one can enjoy the scent, and a twentieth century swimming pool encircled by an arcade of apples. New gardens are continuing: a small, shady glade, a canal garden, an orchard underplanted with crinum and an 18th Century Banqueting Hall.”
Keep an eye on the NGS website for further information.

Over the last few years we have supplied and supported Dandelion Time charity at their base in West Farleigh.

With materials including our Premium Topsoil / Peat Free Compost Blend being used to support their growing vegetable gardens, and our 20mm Sandy Loam Topsoil, for use in the construction of a new pond and surrounding planting. The topsoil helped create a bank around the pond, due to its location on a sloping field.

The pond is now full of life and providing a wonderful space for both learning and quiet reflection, away from the busier areas of the farm.

We also saw our Topsoil / Peat Free Compost Blend being used to fill up the vegetable and herb beds, with tomatoes, lettuces and rosemary already being planted.

Dandelion Time is a nature based charity that works with children and their families to overcome issues and difficulties. Giving support to children who may have suffered from traumatic experiences such as domestic abuse and neglect. Helping them to build self-esteem and confidence to cope with home, school and general life.

We’re proud to support a number of local charities, who do fantastic work in the community. Thanks for having us back to visit!

*Gardenscape Revisited*
In October 2025, we supplied a series of five custom blends to Great Dixter House and Gardens and Transition Town Hastings, for a new community coastal garden project.
Local people and a team of experts from Great Dixter created Hasting's first "living laboratory" on the seafront. Yesterday, we visited to see how the project has come along since and it's looking great just a few months on!

Our custom blends included: a Shingle mix, a Sharp Sand and Horticultural Grit mix, and three different ratio blends of Shingle, Sharp Sand, LECA, Peat Free Compost and Topsoil.

“This pilot initiative will play a key role in shaping the wider landscape design for the Town Deal-funded Hastings Public Realm and Green Connections project, and the team will be trialling a new kind of climate-resilient, biodiversity-rich planting scheme, designed especially for our harsh seaside conditions. This planting scheme trial will help test future landscaping and biodiversity approaches across the town centre project."
