Shrub of the week: Black Lace Elder (Sambucus nigra 'Black Lace')

With this week's chilly temperatures, grey skies and persistent rain, it feels more like October than it does June! So it seemed fitting to feature the stunning Black Lace Elder, a shrub that brings autumn colours to the garden all summer long.

This hardy shrub requires little care apart from pruning to keep in check as can get to 10ft. The striking contrast between the pale pink of the delicate flowers and the black foliage makes this a show stopper in any garden, instantly grabbing deserved attention from human, insect and bird guests alike in your garden!

🧩Fun fact: Black Lace Elder is a cultivated variety of our native Elder. While the flowers can be used to make elderflower cordial and the berries can be cooked into jams and wines, it's the striking foliage that steals the show in this garden favourite!

🪻Flower of the week this week is this beautiful specimen! The French Lavender. This is a hardy, drought tolerant shrub that loves full sun and good drainage, but is very low maintenance.

🧩 Fun fact! Unlike traditional varieties, the French Lavender has a antiseptic quality and as such was used by soldiers during WW1 as a antiseptic.

The Lupin is an easy to grow herbaceous perennial plant, that can have many different colours to suit your gardens colour scheme and spread from seeds.
⚠️Life saving fun fact! It is advisable for people who have severe peanut allergies to be careful around these plants, as they are biological cousins to peanuts and can cause cross-reactive allergic reaction.

Flower of the week!

Here we have the Dutch iris. it is reliable and hardy, forming in clumps which grow larger each year, these can be split into new clumps. The contrast of the purple and yellow works perfectly as they are at opposite ends of the colour wheel. Fun fact: it gets it's name from the Greek Goddess, Iris. She was a Greek messenger and aptly the Goddess of the rainbow. Follow for more weekly updates 😃

🌷Flower of the week!🌷

This week's flower of the week is this beautiful example of Dicentra, this specific variety is the Bleeding Heart. It's an herbaceous perennial with beautiful flowers, ants help them reproduce by taking their seeds into their burrows.
Fun fact! Japanese folklore tells a story of a maiden who refused a prince who then took his own life with a dagger, leaving only a bleeding heart.
