D1842 - 47192 Locomotive

Basil is 60 years old today!

New to traffic as D1842 at Crewe North (5A) on the 14th of May 1965. Withdrawn as 47192 from Crewe DMD in 1988 after a short working life of just under 23 years. It has now spent far longer in preservation than it did working for BR.

It will be running this Sunday the 18th of May at the EVR on the usual 3x return trip timetable.

D1842 has been out in test today following completion of B Exam and repairs. This should see the loco ready for the start of 2024 operations at the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway from the Easter Weekend onwards.

Work has been progressing steadily on D1842 over the past few weeks, the loco is currently undergoing a B Exam in readiness for the 2024 operating season. The loco having not seen much use since before the Christmas trains in 2023.

Good progress was made this weekend, the brake blocks have been replaced, brake rigging repairs and adjustment carried out (3001A) and a top end engine inspection undertaken. Thanks are due to the 8F guys for machining parts for the brake rigging.
Work carried out over previous weekends includes a full underframe inspection, traction motor inspection, greasing, inspection of the auxiliary machines and thorough inspection of the control cubicle.

A bit more work over the next couple of weekends will see the loco ready for operation in time for the EVR’s first major operation over the Easter weekend.

D1842 is out tomorrow (12/8/22) standing in for steam during the hot weather.

Friday 12th, Saturday 13th & Sunday 14th August:

Yesterday saw a very large fire in a field just over a mile away from the railway at Shottle which was attended by eight fire engines to get it under control. Whilst this incident is not related to the railway, it does remind us all of how dry the vegetation in the local area is. We are naturally concerned that operating steam trains causes a significant risk of line side fires.

In addition, the continued high temperatures over the next few days will contribute to worryingly high temperatures on the footplate for our volunteer crews who already work in hot conditions.

We have therefore taken the difficult decision, in line with many other heritage railways, to replace our steam trains with heritage diesel trains on the above days.

Work on D1842’s B Exam has progressed well this weekend. All pit work on the loco has been completed, underframe cleaning and a body wash have also been carried out. Another weekends work next week will see the loco ready for the mixed traffic gala over the weekend of the 18th and 19th of June.

1842 received an A Exam on Saturday in preparation for its running day on Tuesday and next weeks diesel gala.

Today has seen some repairs carried out on the loco. Renewal of the speed piston diaphragm and adjusting/setting of various brake components.

After an A Exam and repairs over the weekend D1842 will be out tomorrow on the Purple Timetable.
