ROGUE TRADERS
No one likes them, the trade professionals nor the paying customer.
Social media is full of business now,all claiming to be the best, fully insured etc etc.
Itβs an absolute minefield π€―
Here are a few tips to on how to avoid them and avoid being the victim of them π‘
β
Do your research.
Do they have a social media page, web site, google review page? If so look at previous jobs and customer reviews. Remember though the internet can be not all it seems. Companies can post pictures of work that isnβt theirs or obtain fake reviews.
Alternatively you could ask friends and family for recommendations (this is by far the best way). Be wary of recommendations on social media as they could be (not always) be friends and family of the company or person they are recommending.
β
Are they qualified for the job in hand? Most tradespeople undergo years of training. For instance we have window installation qualifications, window surveying qualifications, bricklaying qualifications, flat roofing qualifications etc. Quality tradespeople work tirelessly to perfect their craft in order to produce work to a high standard.
β
Does the work you want doing require any certification and are they able to provide this?
Certain work requires certification such as window and door installations. When you change these you are altering the thermal value of your property and require a building regulations certification. It is the homeownerβs responsibility to make sure they obtain a building regulations certificate when required.
Most rogue traders will happily fit your windows or knock through a wall etc, get their money and will leave you to deal with the consequences after!!.
β
Insurance, this is a must. Make sure they are fully insured. Some companies claim to be insured but only have a basic insurance policy.
There are many aspects of liability insurance such as window installation (glazing), structural work, working at heights, subcontracting work to other trades on their job etc. Accidents do happen and if they do you need to know your property is protected.
β
Always try and obtain a fully written and detailed quote which explains exactly what you are having and make sure that the price stated is the price you pay at the end of the job with no hidden extras. Be clear about exactly what you want and make sure you have it in writing.
β
Payments - while deposits are common you need to have a think about how much you are paying up front or midway through a job. If it seems excessive you need to question this and if you are unsure most reputable companies would be willing to give you help and advice if you think you are being asked to pay too much.
β
The cheapest quote is almost never the best!! Insurance costs, using quality materials and doing the job right will always add money to any quote but you will only be paying once and getting the job done right as opposed to paying out and having to get the job redone again.
We hope you find this helpful, as a company we pride ourselves on our honesty and professionalism.
If you need any help or advice then we would be happy to assist the best we can π
