Tomorrow, October 10th, is World Mental Health Day, when the nation is being called upon to support ‘Take 10’, a reading for pleasure campaign, launched by The National Literacy Trust and endorsed by Manchester Libraries Read Manchester, to promote the wellbeing benefits of reading.

Studies into reading have found that picking up a book offers numerous mental health benefits, including stress reduction, enhanced empathy, cognitive stimulation and improved emotional well-being.

Thanks to books kindly donated by Manchester Libraries Read Manchester Manchester City Council, the team at Thermal Road Repairs Ltd started support of this initiative early – here are a few photos of them taking 10minutes out of their busy day to read, relax & revive!

Hot July caused an increase in pothole-related incidents on our roads, says the AA. But the statistics are not as damning as the headlines suggest.

The AA has released an update on its ongoing Pothole Index which records the number of pothole-related callouts that it responds to. It says that there has been a ‘shock increase’ in incidents in July 2025.The AA suggests that the unusually hot July we experienced has led to more pothole inciden...

Counting carbon accurately is no mean feat – as National Highways’ latest update on its progress towards net zero demonstrates.

At the end of last month, National Highways held a webinar to update the industry on its progress against its net zero targets. Attendees also heard from three of its construction and maintenance suppliers: Balfour Beatty Highways, Tarmac and white line company WJ which manufactures materials and eq...

Let’s talk RAP!

Transport for London (TfL) has proved that road surfaces containing 50% recycled asphalt planings (RAP) can perform as well as virgin material – but it’s not for everyone.

Transport for London (TfL) has revealed the results of a nine-year trial which shows that a road surface containing 50% RAP has performed just as well as a control section made from a standard specification mix. This is a high proportion for the UK. Up until this summer, National Highways’ specific...

Recent bouts of heavy rainfall around the UK remind us of the importance of maintaining and clearing drains and other assets. A new guide sets out how local communities can help.

As well as the many other road-related challenges faced by local authorities is the need to increase the resilience of their networks in the face of climate change. A new publication from construction research and information organisation CIRIA, published last week, suggests a new way to help tackle...

Those working to maintain our roads face danger and aggression from motorists every day. They deserve better.

Last week National Highways urged night-time drivers not to drive into coned off areas on the M6 where workers are carrying out extensive maintenance to a bridge over the motorway. Since the works began in May, and with an exit slip road closed at night, several drivers have been ignoring the closur...

It’s a tough time for graduates and other young job seekers. But it could also be a great time to start a career in construction.

A rather depressing headline in The Telegraph caught our eye this week: ‘Entry level jobs in freefall after launch of ChatGPT’. The story was based on information from job search site Adzuna which says that vacancies for graduate jobs, apprenticeships, internships and other junior jobs have fall...

The industry needs a shake up if it is to deliver the Government’s 10-year pipeline of infrastructure projects, says the Stewart Review. Will Tier 2 and 3contractors get a chance to deliver more value to clients?

It’s been an interesting week of reading for those of us working in the infrastructure sector. Last Wednesday, James Stewart’s review of HS2 was published, followed closely by the Government’s 10-year infrastructure strategy. The first report says that the industry isn’t in a fit state to del...
