Tomatoes Hate Cucumbers: Secrets Of Companion Planting and Popular Planting Combinations 🍅🥒👇

1. Differing Water Needs: Cucumbers need consistent moisture to remain juicy and sweet, while tomatoes thrive in drier soil conditions once they’re established. Overwatering tomatoes to meet cucumber needs can cause root diseases due to waterlogged soil.

2. Space and Light Competition: Cucumbers are vigorous climbers or sprawlers that can overshadow tomatoes, limiting their essential sunlight exposure vital for healthy fruit development.

3. Risk of Disease Transmission: Both tomatoes and cucumbers are vulnerable to diseases like powdery mildew and bacterial wilt. Growing them close can accelerate the spread of these diseases.

Ideal Companions for Tomatoes and Cucumbers

1. For Tomatoes:
Basil: Enhances tomato flavor while repelling flies and mosquitoes.
Marigolds: Keep away nematodes and other garden pests.
Carrots: Help loosen the soil, facilitating better air and water flow around the tomato roots.

2. For Cucumbers:
Radishes: Act as a deterrent against cucumber beetles.
Sunflowers: Provide a natural trellis for cucumber vines and attract pollinators.
Lettuce: Benefits from the shade provided by cucumber plants, which helps keep the root environment cool.

Want your wisteria to bloom beautifully in spring? Here's our guide to make sure it flourishes:

💜 Wisteria is best pruned twice a year, now in January or February, as well as in July or August

💜 Wisteria needs regular pruning to keep its vigorous growth and overall size under control, and also to improve its flowering

💜 In winter, when the plant is dormant and leafless, cut back the long whippy shoots to two or three buds to tidy up the plant before the growing season starts, taking care not to prune any main shoots you're training

💜 Winter pruning also ensures the flowers won’t be hidden by leaves

Apple and pear trees need pruning in winter to keep them productive and in good shape. 🍎🍐 Follow these expert steps to ensure you make the right cuts:

1 Mature, medium and large apple trees benefit from having vigorous young shoots cut back and overcrowded branches thinned in winter. Open up the centre of the tree so air can circulate and sun can reach developing fruits in summer.

2 If large branches need removing from a tree do this gradually over several years.

3 Remove any damaged, diseased, dead or crossing limbs.

4. Cutting back vigorous young shoots can encourage productive fruiting spurs to form.

5. Prune freshly planted and young apple and pear trees, so they form a good framework of branches.

Thank you to all our wonderful customers, we hope you have a relaxing Christmas and New Year. 2024 has been even busier than 2023 and for that I'm extremely grateful.
Sadly, Jasmine is going to have to have an operation on her ACL early next year so will be out of action but that means she's had more time to devote to expanding her film business (which is growing too).
Look forward to seeing everyone in 2025. Thanks again!
