🌳 Ash Tree Thinning – Safety & Tree Management in Devon 🌳

We recently carried out crown thinning on mature Ash trees (Fraxinus excelsior) at a wellbeing and health retreat, improving light, airflow, and overall safety for visitors.

Due to the risks associated with Ash dieback (Hymenoscyphus fraxineus), along with dense canopy and limb weight, the work helped to reduce potential hazards, lower liability, and create a safer environment. All work was completed in line with BS3998 best practice standards, maintaining structural integrity where possible.

🐦 Nesting Season Notice
As work took place during bird nesting season (March–August), thorough nesting bird checks were carried out before starting. No active nests were present, ensuring compliance with wildlife protection guidelines.

🌳 We provide expert tree thinning, pruning, crown reduction, and tree removal services across Devon, with a focus on safety, compliance, and tree health.

Garden Restoration & Vegetation Management – Plymouth 🌿

Another satisfying project completed in Plymouth, focusing on restoring control and balance to an overgrown space 🌱

This job involved managing heavy regrowth from elm, along with the removal of a semi-invasive species — pheasant berry (Leycesteria formosa), also known as Himalayan honeysuckle.

Originally introduced to the UK in the 19th century as an ornamental garden plant, pheasant berry quickly became popular for its attractive flowers and berries. However, it has a tendency to spread aggressively, self-seeding and outcompeting native plants if left unmanaged. While not officially classified as invasive, it can dominate gardens and hedgerows, reducing biodiversity.

By removing this species and controlling elm regrowth, we’ve helped restore the space, allowing for healthier, more manageable planting moving forward 🌳

If your garden is becoming overgrown or needs reclaiming, now is a great time to take action.

🍁 Norway Maple Reduction – Professional Tree Care in Devon 🍁

We recently carried out a crown reduction on a Norway Maple (Acer platanoides), reshaping the tree to better suit its space while maintaining its natural form and long-term health. As part of the work, ivy was severed at the base to allow it to die back for later removal, ensuring minimal stress to the tree.

This type of tree pruning and crown reduction improves light, safety, and balance without compromising structure, all completed to BS3998 best practice standards.

🐦 Nesting Season Notice
During bird nesting season (March–August), we always carry out thorough nesting bird checks before starting work. Protecting wildlife is a key part of responsible tree surgery and arboriculture, and no active nests were present.

🌳 From Norway Maples to mature garden trees, we provide expert tree pruning, crown reduction, tree removal, and hedge work across Devon.

🌳 Does My Tree Look Right? Understanding Tree Growth 🌳

Ever wondered why your tree leans, twists, or grows unevenly? It’s often down to natural growth responses:

🌿 Phototropism – growth towards light
🌍 Gravitropism – roots grow down, stems grow up
💧 Hydrotropism – roots seek out water
🧪 Thigmotropism – growth influenced by touch or obstacles

These processes help trees adapt to their environment, but sometimes unusual growth can raise safety or structural concerns.

If your tree doesn’t look quite right, it may need professional assessment, pruning, or management to keep it safe and healthy.

💥 Not sure? Get peace of mind today.
We offer no-obligation basic inspections and expert advice on all aspects of tree care and tree surgery.

🌿 End of Pruning Season – But We’re Not Done Yet! 🌿

As the traditional pruning season comes to a close, many trees have had their winter maintenance — improving structure, safety, and overall health ready for the growing season ahead.

However, not all trees follow the same schedule.

🌳 Summer pruning is essential for a wide range of species, including:

Walnut
Magnolia
Pear
Cherry ..and many more

These trees benefit from pruning during the warmer months, helping to reduce the risk of disease (such as silver leaf in stone fruits), control excessive growth, improve fruit production, and maintain a strong, balanced structure.

☀️ With summer approaching, now is the perfect time to start planning ahead. Whether it’s improving fruit yield, managing size, or keeping your trees safe and healthy — we’re here to help.

A fresh sunrise marks the shift from winter into spring 🌿 As tree dormancy comes to an end, trees’ biological functions are beginning to restart — sap is rising, buds are forming, and energy is being directed into new growth.

This means the window for fruit tree pruning has ended, and we have now move into bird nesting season (March–August).

This is a time of growth, longer days, and new life — where tree care must be carried out responsibly, with wildlife protection in mind. Due to nesting season, some work may be delayed or require additional checks before it can go ahead.

If you’re considering tree pruning, crown reduction, or tree removal, now is the time to plan work carefully around the season.

🌿 Making a Great First Impression! 🌿
Today we helped a homeowner in Devon prep their garden for sale. A tidy exterior is just as important as a clean interior when it comes to attracting buyers.

We gave the roadside grass boundary a smart cut and pruned back a wisteria creeping into the roof uding the phone lines as a bridge . This kind of work not only improves kerb appeal but helps avoid red flags during inspections.

🎯 A look back at a few highlights from this year at LumberJak Tree Care!

We’ve had the pleasure of working on a range of projects—each requiring skill, care, and an eye for detail. From the removal of a small conifer to trimming and reducing a beautifully maintained mixed-species boundary hedge, every job was approached with the same dedication.

We also reshaped a compact Leylandii hedge and carried out careful reductions on 3 apple trees, making them much more accessible—no ladders needed now! 🍏✂️
Each cut was made with precision to ensure the long-term health of the trees and hedges, while keeping everything tidy and balanced.

If you're looking for a professional team that values clean results, sustainable methods, and thoughtful tree care, we’d love to help.
