This week, we’re starting work on a town house in Finsbury. As is the case with much of the period property in London, after years of facing the elements, blemishes have appeared on its surface which could impact the structural integrity of the house in the long run. Our first job was to to cut out and dry pack the brickwork around the window before putting in reinforcement bars above.

You never know what you’re going to be met with on a job! We’re currently carrying out some work on the exterior of this 100 year old property and whilst we hadn’t initially planned to completely rebuild the windowsills, the condition turned out to be far worse than first expected. Where the sills have completely disintegrated, we’re refilling the space with fresh concrete. These will then be plastered and repainted, good as new!

Back in March we set about exploring the condition of this 160 year old property. It quickly became apparent that the house was constructed of shuttered, hollow columns. Upon learning this, we were tasked with the job of shuttering the exterior using chemical anchors. For this, we poured 700 mm of the chemical mixture into each of the 16 columns on the ground and first floors.

Before starting work on this 160 year old concrete house, the first of its kind to be built in London, we had a job on our hands clearing the overgrown ivy and shrubs, as well as layers of old paint. Once cleared, we were able to access the rendering of the property in order to access its structural condition.

Inside & Out Limited are starting the repair of a 160 year old property in London, the first building to be built in concrete in the capital, no less! Here, we’re cutting back the rendering which was put in place 40 years ago to reveal previous repairs to the house, as well cavities in the building’s structure which have appeared over time.
