DELIVERING AN ARCHITECTURE MASTERCLASS AT KINGSHOTT SCHOOL HITCHIN, YEAR 9 CAREERS WEEK

Co-Director, Marissa Worcester recently had the absolute pleasure of delivering a Year 9 Careers Week masterclass at Kingshott School, introducing pupils to the world of architecture, design and the built environment.

The session was designed to show that architecture is not just about drawing beautiful buildings. It is about people, safety, access, structure, sustainability, regulations, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

The pupils were set a live-style design challenge: to create a social space for Kingshott School that could host their school prom.

Working in teams, they explored:

• drawing to scale
• access and health and safety
• utilities and infrastructure
• practical site considerations
• structural thinking
• branding, posters, tickets and event promotion
• 3D mock-ups and client presentation skills

What impressed me most was the level of imagination, confidence and teamwork shown throughout the session. Each group developed a creative theme, produced visual material and presented their ideas back as if pitching to a real client.

For me, this is exactly why engaging with schools matters.

Architecture brings together creativity and practicality in a way that can open young people’s eyes to so many different career paths - design, engineering, planning, interiors, construction, project management, sustainability and more.

A huge thank you to Kingshott School for inviting me to be part of Careers Week, and to the Year 9 pupils for their energy, enthusiasm and brilliant ideas.

At Worcester Lloyd, we believe strongly in supporting the next generation and helping young people understand the opportunities available within our industry.

The future of architecture depends on inspiring young people early and after this session, I have no doubt there is plenty of talent coming through.

The Next Generation of Architects Need Us.

Now More Than Ever

It is incredibly tough to be an architecture graduate right now.

After years of study, long hours, financial commitment, creative pressure and personal sacrifice, many graduates are stepping out into an industry that feels uncertain, cautious and, at times, difficult to break into.

The current economic climate is making recruitment harder. Practices are watching costs. Projects can feel slower to move. Opportunities can feel fewer.

For students and graduates, that can be deeply disheartening.

But my message to anyone trying to enter this profession is this:

Stick with it.

If architecture is your dream, do not let the current climate convince you that there is no place for you.

Work hard. Keep learning. Keep improving. Keep asking for opportunities. Take the work experience. Take the mentoring. Ask questions. Build your portfolio. Show up with energy, humility and determination.

And most importantly, do not take no as the final answer.

Sometimes a “no” simply means “not yet”, “not here”, or “not in this way.”

Keep going.

But this is not only a message for students.

It is also a message for us as architects, practice owners, directors, mentors and leaders in the industry.

We have a duty to help the next generation.

That means offering work experience placements where we can.

It means giving time for mentoring.

It means supporting students in education.

It means opening the door, even slightly, so that young people can see what the profession really is and believe that they can be part of it.

Because if we do not support the next generation of architects, designers and technologists, then what happens to the future of our industry?

Architecture relies on fresh thinking, curiosity, creativity and ambition.

We cannot afford to let talented young people walk away simply because nobody gave them a chance.

At Worcester Lloyd, we believe in encouraging people at the beginning of their architectural journey. Skills develop. Confidence grows. Experience comes with time.

But passion, work ethic and determination should always be nurtured.

To every architecture student and graduate trying to find your way:

Keep going. Keep pushing. Keep believing.

And to every architect in a position to help:

Let’s make sure we are not just designing buildings, but helping to build the future of our profession too.

Our current work experience placement in Hitchin is with Ella, year 12 student at Hitchin Girls School.

THE EMOTIONAL SIDE OF DESIGNING A HOME

WORCESTER LLOYD ARCHITECTS & ENGINEERS

Designing a home is never just about walls, windows, layouts and materials.

It is about how people want to live.

When we meet a client at the very beginning of their journey, the first conversation is rarely just technical. Yes, we talk about space, planning, structure, light and budget, but behind every project there is usually something much more personal.

A growing family that needs room to breathe.

A couple wanting to create a home they can enjoy for the next chapter of their lives.

A family who love where they live, but know their house no longer works for them.

A homeowner who has had ideas in their head for years, but has never quite been able to picture how they could become real.

That is why the early design stage matters so much.

At Worcester Lloyd, we believe our role is not simply to produce drawings. It is to listen carefully, understand what matters, explore the options properly, and help our clients feel confident and excited about the decisions they are making.

Through thoughtful design, 3D visuals and joined-up architectural and structural thinking, we help clients see what is possible before planning applications are submitted or building work begins.

Because a successful home is not just one that looks beautiful.

It is one that feels right.

It supports daily life, reflects the people who live there, and gives them confidence that the investment they are making is the right one.

That emotional connection is where good architecture really begins.

FALL IN LOVE ❤️ WITH YOUR DESIGN BEFORE ITS BUILT!

Choosing materials for a new home, extension or renovation should feel exciting, not uncertain.

At Worcester Lloyd, we use 3D visuals and video to help our clients see how different materials, colours, textures and styles will actually look before a planning application is submitted.

This means you can experiment with ideas instantly, without commitment.

Would the brick feel too heavy?
Would render soften the design?
Would timber cladding add warmth?
Would a darker frame make the glazing feel more refined?

Instead of trying to imagine the finished result from flat drawings alone, our clients can properly understand the design, explore options and make confident decisions early.

For us, this is about far more than visuals. It is about helping clients get to know their project, connect with it and fall in love with it before it is even built.

We are often surprised by how many people tell us they have previously experienced a feasibility or early design stage that felt worrying, unclear or full of uncertainty.

That should not be the case.

The early design stage should bring excitement, energy and clarity. It should give you confidence in what is possible and reassurance in the decisions being made.

This is a key part of the Worcester Lloyd approach, and one of the ways we believe we set ourselves apart from many other architects.

We do not just design buildings.

We help clients see, understand and believe in them from the very beginning.

EARLY DESIGN VISUALISATION SAVES TIME & MONEY DURING THE CONSTRUCTION STAGE

At Worcester Lloyd, we believe clients should be able to see and understand their design clearly before key decisions are made.

That is why we create detailed 3D models and videos of our designs from the outset, allowing our clients to properly visualise how their home, extension, renovation or commercial property will look before a planning application is submitted.

This approach removes so much of the uncertainty that can exist at the early design stage.

Instead of trying to imagine a scheme from 2D drawings alone, our clients can walk through the design, understand the spaces, explore options and feel confident about what they are saying yes to.

This matters because uncertainty at the beginning can lead to changes later.

And changes during construction can be costly, stressful and disruptive.

By investing time in proper design preparation before construction begins, we help our clients avoid unnecessary alterations, protect their budget and move forward with greater confidence.

At Worcester Lloyd, we are one of the few architectural companies that offer 3D design as part of the early design process. It is one of the things that makes us different.

We combine architecture, structural engineering and visual design thinking from the outset, so our clients are not just presented with a design - they are given the clarity to understand it.

Because a successful build starts long before anyone arrives on site.

It starts with clear design, careful preparation and complete confidence in the direction of travel.

VISIT: RIVERSIDE MUSEUM GLASGOW
Designed by Dame ZAHA HADID

- One of our most admired architects 1950-2016

Worcester Lloyd co director, Marissa Worcester recently visited the Riverside Museum in Glasgow, designed by Dame Zaha Hadid.

“It was an incredible experience, the building is a real reminder of what can happen when bold architectural vision is followed through with conviction. Its dramatic form and varied roof gradients create a space that feels both dynamic and completely resolved - a design that is ambitious, distinctive and, most importantly, works beautifully.

As an architect, it was inspiring to spend time in a place that reflects such determination in the design process. You can really sense the strength of intent behind it, and I admired the commitment to carrying that vision through to completion. The museum opened in 2011 and brings together more than 3,000 objects from Glasgow’s transport collections, so it is as engaging for those interested in mechanics and engineering as it is for those passionate about architecture and design.

I would thoroughly encourage anyone with an interest in architecture, design or mechanics to go and experience it for themselves.”

MARKETING DERBY Bondholders
WORCESTER LLOYD

Today I attended a fantastic networking event at the EMA training building in Derby, hosted by Marketing Derby organised brilliantly, as always, by Lindsey Hatfield

As proud Marketing Derby Bondholders, it was great to be part of an event that brought local businesses together to discuss such an important and fast-moving topic.

We heard from the team at EMA training about current AI trends and how businesses like ours will need to prepare for new legislation relating to AI expected later this year. Although we already use AI within our business, I still came away having learnt a great deal, which is exactly what a valuable event should do.

It was also a pleasure to meet Penny Wiltshire , Funding Development Manager at Derventio, a fantastic Derbyshire-based charity doing vital work to support people who need help most across the region. It was also great to catch up with Gary Stringer as always!

A really worthwhile morning of learning, connection and conversation.
