After digging up 36 saplings from a garden, I planted about half a dozen in a field. Most were lost to wildlife, probably rabbits, so Ive potted up the rest to grow on until a bit stronger.

In winter, saplings and seeds are a great sustenance for many mammals and other forms of life. And of the hundreds and thousands of seeds that a single tree can produce, if just one of those seeds makes it to maturity its considered good odds.

So, with no great effort from us, those odds can easily be multiplied. Remember though, if you do go digging up saplings from the wild on your woodland walks, leave plenty for the beasties who benefit from the bounty of the trees. A few is plenty. Balance is key. πŸŒ±πŸŒ²πŸŒ³πŸŒΏπŸπŸ‚

Just picked up my order from Treescapes Ltd in Matlock. 10 Downy Birch and 10 Alder bare root trees for planting on an old open cast site.
Both Alder and Birch are pioneer plants in that they grow on and benefit poor boggy soil, improving the land so that other plants are able to grow there.
Winter is the time of year to be planting bare root trees, and a single tree can cost as little as Β£1! It's cheap and easy to help rewild the land so what you waiting for!?

Today is ! πŸ’š

As we approach our 75th Anniversary, the words of our founding member Lady Eve Balfour continue to ring true πŸ“£

The way we eat and farm is at the heart of ensuring a sustainable future that works for nature, the climate and our health - soil is the factor that connects this all together 🌍

From day one, we've been championing ways of farming that promote healthy, living soils:

❓ Working with farmers to come up with practical solutions, and testing new farming methods to will improve their soils

✊ Lobbying the government, ensuring they see soil is a fundamental environmental resource that should be given at least the same level of protection as water and air

πŸ“š Raising awareness about the benefits of healthy soils, and ways everyone help people protect them in their daily lives
