Happy Friday! Today we are pollarding a Willow. Here is some information to pollarding…. 🌳 Why do people pollard trees? 🌳
Pollarding is a traditional tree-management technique where upper branches are regularly cut back to control growth, and when done properly, it has real benefits:
✅ Keeps trees at a safe, manageable size
✅ Reduces risk of falling branches in storms
✅ Extends the lifespan of certain tree species
✅ Encourages fresh, healthy regrowth
✅ Ideal for streets, parks, and urban areas
⚠️ Important: Pollarding must be done correctly and on the right species; it’s not the same as harmful “topping.” When done poorly or inconsistently, it can damage trees.
You’ve probably seen pollarded trees lining streets or in old parks…strange-looking in winter, but full and leafy by summer! 🌱
