My Sambucus nigra Black Lace looking fabulous this year. Every March I prune it quite hard and it sends out huge stems. But not this year; I let it flower instead, it's better than I expected. A stunning tree for a wild garden or a small one - quick growing easy to control, great for wildlife, gorgeous.

A visit to a client's garden on the north Devon coast - and my first view of the front approach after the planting has settled in. Clearly loving life on this sunny exposed site!

A lot of plants for this new site - a wild border with lots of grasses mixed with flowering perennials. As ever it's a heavy wet soil so it may be a bit slow to establish but will have to wait to see how it develops.

Autumn planting done on this small town garden, Instow. A winter rest until the bulk of the spring planting to come. A sweeping gravel and slate path from the refurbished terraced house to the pergola-cum-shed will be planted with more grasses, thymes and thrift while the borders will have a coastal Mediterranean vibe. Roll on spring!

When a client asks you for a social to enjoy the garden you created you know you've got something right. A deep mucky hole - a 'balancing pond' - at the bottom of their new garden is transformed into an ornamental pond with a pontoon and boardwalk. Gabions wall and wildlife friendly planting complete the scene and embrace the view.

Good to revisit this contemporary style garden in north Devon - a low maintenance modern garden for a new house in a tight space. A pond and garden room with veg beds hidden beyond, all sheltered from coastal winds by the existing planting the client was persuaded to keep.
