Sadly hippopottering lost lolli yesterday 07/04/2026.
She will be sadly missed. She fell and got a bleed on the brain. She remained in a coma for 16 days but unfortunately suffered a further bleed and it was decided it would be kindest to let her go.
I am still in London sorting out arrangements and being comforted by friends. I will be returning to the nursery some time next week and we will start to reopen.
At present it's a bit raw. Lolli loved her work at hippopottering and we loved her.
So we ask everyone to just give me a little time to get back to some kind of normality and get back to the nursery

To absolutely everyone. We are so sorry that we are not around at present. We will get back to you. We will sort out open days and orders. We are not ignoring you.
But Lorraine has had a fall and has suffered a massive brain injury. I am by her bedside in London. This is not a get well soon kind of thing, it's far more serious than that so I know everyone will understand.
But in the meantime, I haven't got a clue how to even get into the website so I don't even know if anyone is complaining about their order.
I am hoping to take some time off sitting by the bed and return to nursery for a day or so but at present I am prioritizing Lorraine.
We will be having open days and will announce the dates very shortly.
And I am attempting to answer all emails but don't be offended if it takes me some time to muddle through.
My pal Emma will come and sort the website out as soon as I know what day I plan to go back to nursery.

So spring has sprung early but loads still not in leaf.
Have been requested to open nursery on Saturday but I have quite a heavy schedule.

If I opened this Saturday would anyone come?
Just asking because I will be coming from London.

New stock for sale, but new grafts won't be ready till June.

Nursery closing.

Please note the nursery will be closed from next week until sometime in April.
We urge all those people that have asked us to save trees, pick them up this week. The weather is good and we are still doing mail order..
But last day of mail order is tomorrow and last entry into nursery is 18 January.
Once we set the alarms on the nursery, we leave them on so can't have pick ups during our away time... although we can leave things at house if pre arranged. Just for once, it's not an Acer picture but it is my happy place, my garden...

Ok so it's cold outside. A lot of snow. Nothing new for Japanese maples. In fact we find the colder the winter, the better and brighter the spring colours.
First thing is do not panic and do not run out into the snow trying to save them.
They are fine, they don't need your help and they certainly do not like big changes in temps so do not be tempted to put them in the kitchen/greenhouse/summer house etc. Doing this will only shock them, force them into leaf early and it can kill them.

So...the most tender is shirasawanums (they go to minus 15 whereas palmatums minus 20. I imagine the new Korean maples like ice dragon will suffer even harsher temps.

Back in the 90s our nursery...which is an outdoor Acer nursery, hit minus 22 and big big snow. The few tunnels we had were brought down by the weight of the snow. The maples...well they were fine....even the shirasawanums survived minus 22.

So please don't go out to rescue them.... Yes the supermarket rooted cuttings will only do about minus 10 but honestly take charge. That broken hip costs far more than replacing an orange dream.

Yes we have added a few bits n bobs. Check out the unique stock section. Preferably each tree requires its own box as if the courier looses them, we can only offer credit notes as they are just trees I have saved with a notion to graft off them but I realized that holding onto 300 different cultivars would mean we had to graft over 9000 trees to get up to 30 of each and these trees remain so slow growing that it would be impossible to do this. We only have room to graft 1000 per year so regretfully I am letting these go in an attempt to put a dent in the overdraft.

IKANDI draw....
Congratulations to
Eric C and Richie emmerson wood. Both have won ikandi and we will be in touch.

For sharing posts, the grandma ghost was won by Lee Burns. Again we will be in touch.

Thank you to all our customers this year. It's been quite demanding with our health. Slowly on the mend.

We are still dispatching trees but final order day is approaching. The couriers are taking about 4 days for delivery so we will need to make the final dispatch date Tuesday.
We will then re open in January for 2 weeks to clear any parcels that we have held over (held because we can't replace if lost) and also may do a little pop up over the holidays with some oddments 3 ltr.
We will then close for our winter break and be back again in March/April..not sure yet.
Wishing you all a merry Christmas and if you don't get what you want then pop into our shop on 27th Dec and you may just find it.
Love from Pat and lolli ###

Due to courier issues we are extending our black Friday deal of 3 x 3ltr trees for 100 including delivery.

The deal will run until 5 December so we will also extend the ikandi draw until then (unless we run out). 3 tickets for ikandi draw per deal.

Currently 2 ikandis will be given out in the draw and we have about 150 tickets in the draw so far.

We will not be sending them next week but intend to deliver before Xmas (intended dispatch 8th to 10th Dec). They are very good quality trees and ready to pot into ornamental pots for Christmas gifts. Look at the bark on our sango kakus who wouldn't want that for Christmas. We will de pot them for easier transportation. Search our website under black Friday.
