Heatherwood Lodge

Extension and refurbishment of a 19th century cottage. The work involved doubling the existing cottage, effectively mirroring the existing in ways that appear both consistent and unexpected. Bays, oriels, brick and tile patterns are exaggerated and rescaled, giving the extension an uncanny but also sensitive relationship the original.

What Goes Around

We are delighted to have won the Activation category awards.

What Goes Around is a seasonal bandstand in Mitcham Fair Green, South London. Commissioned by it plays hosts to a fantastically eclectic range of events over the summer including brass bands, DJ sets, dance classes, chess clubs, reading classes and music of all shapes and sizes.

It reinvents the bandstand for a contemporary urban setting, using timber and polycarbonate to form a highly decorative and ornamental structure that is useful robust, practical and highly flexible.

We designed it with friends and long-term collaborators who made it beautifully and were supported all the way through by our super dynamic client and design officer .

We have been working on wayfinding signage with James Gordon at . Fabricated from powder coated steel, the signs encourage exploration and draw attention to places and spaces that are hard to find or easy to miss.

In their form they express the direction they are pointing to, expressing through subtle angles and curves, the act of walking and exploring the city. They use colours developed via the client’s Brad strategy and extend its logic from flat graphics to three dimensional forms.

A house in the desert

An image of a competition winning proposal for a new edge of settlement housing typology. The house forms a sequence of interior spaces separated by courtyards and moving from formal and urban at the front to more informal and rural at the back.

Townwall House

Proposal for a four-storey apartment building close to the seafront in Dover.

This design has been developed with the as an alternative vision for the currently empty site that sits below Dover Castle at the base of the white cliffs.

Currently the site has planning approval for a McDonald’s Drive-Dru, a use that would have a catastrophic effect on Dover’s town centre. Not only would it massively exacerbate traffic and pollution problems but it would deter visitors, reduce footfall, adversely affect local businesses and negatively impact on the townscape and its heritage.

Instead we propose a building that meets a critical social need for new, affordable housing, rebuilds the town’s urban fabric and offers a public, community garden space.

Studios on the ground floor and flexible apartments above offer a range of accommodation. These apartments are protected from traffic noise along the incredibly busy Townwall Street by planting, triple-glazed windows and set backs while opening up to the gardens at the rear. Generous, wide balconies provide outdoor space to all flats along with an accessible roof garden.

The building is not apologetic - it says that done well and care, new buildings can add positively to the town and its incredible heritage and offer a positive vision for its future.

House near the Arctic Circle

Finishing up for the year with some important progress on this project for a small house on a wooded site in northern Sweden. Full details in the new year.

Two images of a recently completed house project in Reigate. This was a complex project involving the extension of a Victorian lodge in a conservation area. Several routes had been tried and planning applications rejected before our appointment. We changed tack, adding to the house in a way that extended the logic of the existing building, effectively making a pair of lodges. Materials, patterns and features including hanging tiles, decorative stone and a variety of bay and oriel windows were not so carried over as taken on a walk and stretched around corners.

The diminutive nature of the original house meant that new elements had to both relate but be larger and more generous in scale.

The photograph shows a new section of wall using two types of brick and a large, diamond shaped window. The drawing shows how this relates to the treatment of the external walls.
