🌹 This Starlight Express climbing rose was planted earlier this year where an old evergreen hedge had died off. After plenty of well-rotted manure and a good start, it’s already rewarding me with blooms like this. Amazing what good soil preparation can do! I’m so impressed with it that I might even try propagating a few in the future. 🌿

Today’s workout: gardening in the heat! ☀️💪

It was hard going in the sunshine, but I’m really pleased with how this one turned out. A good tidy-up can make such a difference.

Swipe for the before and after! 🌿✨

One hour spent tidying this front garden last week before the thunderstorms arrived and stopped play ⛈️

Weeds removed from paving and borders, shrubs tidied, and the planting scheme revealed again.

Looking forward to returning and continuing the transformation now the weather seems to be improving 😎🤞

A new project begins 🌱

This allotment belongs to a dedicated eco gardener who hasn’t been able to spend as much time here recently. My role is to help bring it back under control while respecting the plot’s no-dig principles and existing wildlife-friendly approach.

I’m working carefully by hand, keeping soil disturbance to a minimum and preserving as much of the ecosystem as possible.

Here’s the starting point. I’ll share updates as the transformation progresses.

One of my favourite clematis is looking particularly good at the moment. 🌸

Whether yours is Bees’ Jubilee, Doctor Ruppel or another large-flowered variety, these plants reward a little care with months of colour.

Top clematis tips:
• Keep the roots cool and shaded – a mulch or neighbouring plants help.
• Water deeply during dry spells, especially if growing in a pot.
• Feed regularly through spring and early summer with a balanced fertiliser.
• Deadhead spent blooms to keep plants looking tidy and encourage further flowering.
• For large-flowered varieties, remove weak or dead stems in late winter and lightly prune just above a pair of healthy buds.

The poppies in my garden have finally opened 🌺

They never seem to last very long, but for a few days they completely steal the show. I think that’s part of what makes them so special.

A few good jobs for the garden this weekend:
🌿 Deadhead roses and early summer flowers
🌿 Keep on top of w**ds before they take over
🌿 Tie in tall plants before wind and rain flatten them
🌿 Give pots and containers a good soak in the warmer weather
🌿 Trim back spring growth that’s starting to look tired

Enjoy the sunshine while it lasts 😊

My hostas are really starting to fill out now 🌿

They’re such a brilliant plant for shady spots, but they can look a bit tired if they’re not looked after properly.

A few quick tips if you grow them:• Slugs love them (especially new shoots!)• They do best in moist, rich soil• Don’t be afraid to divide them every few years if they get too big• Cut back the leaves once they start to die off in autumn

Little bits of care make a big difference with these.

If you’re ever unsure what to do in your garden or just want help getting things back under control, I’m offering local garden tidy-ups in Driffield and surrounding villages 🌿
