I collected Wych elm for the first time this year as it is a great addition to hedges. This is the first seed to show through. I always find it reassuring when home collected seed starts to show out of the compost. I just hope it is followed by about 5000 others! David Cairns

A couple of photos of one of the peatland restoration projects we have been working on for a few years. Cotton grass just seems to flower better each year.

Two of these seed trays used a peat based compost and the rest is a peat free compost. I will let you judge which was which. The seed trays have been on a bench in the polytunnel and have been watered using a sprayer nozzle on a hose.

It is seed collection time already. Local elm fruiting well, but not as prolific as some of the trees I noticed whilst out and about in the Borders on Saturday - they were absolutely laden with fruits (but I left them as I only have space for a couple of thousand!)

For national crab apple day, here are some of the few thousand of this year's crop. The seeds were collected from apples on an old drive road near Langholm, courtesy of Buccleuch Estate's forester, Dave Nicholson. Growing well in a peat free compost. Still got as many again seeds to get sown but am tight on space, so doing them as two batches.

Juniper which was sown last summer growing well and one of the batches of locally collected pedunculate oak racing away. Good job it is, as that is the polytunnel totally full now, so it might be heading outside shortly. Hope the weather stays settled and that I can get rid of the rabbits that are hanging around.

Looks like I should be ok for juniper berries later in the year - all I need to do now is get there when they are ripe, but before the birds!

A trip out eastwards today. Folks say 'every day is a school day' well, today's lesson was that despite what everyone I know would say, holly will grow successfully in 1.2m tree tubes. About 10-20 and doesn't look like one failure!
