🚨❤️🍸 NEW: A new high-end cocktail bar, Vault, could be opened in the former RBS building in Brook Street in Broughty Ferry.

Architects Wilson/Paul, who are overseeing the design of the new bar, hope to save much of the building's original features. In a nod to the site's history, designers plan to include items like the existing safes and the vault door in the bar area.

Subject to approval, the bar could open in the spring, with a decision due by March 5

🎉 Happy New Year from the WPA Team! 🎉

We are thrilled to kick off 2025 with some exciting news – Planning Permission has been granted for our Hill House project in Broughty Ferry! 🎉🏡

Set against the stunning backdrop of Broughty Ferry, this one-of-a-kind home is perched on an elevated, south-facing site, offering breathtaking panoramic views over the River Tay. 🌊 The design has been thoughtfully crafted to blend seamlessly with its natural surroundings, ensuring minimal impact on the local area.

The upper floor features open-plan living spaces that flow effortlessly onto private terraces through a grand, glazed façade – creating a perfect indoor/outdoor connection. These external spaces are designed as extensions of the home, ideal for hosting and relaxing. ✨

On the ground floor, the sleeping quarters are nestled within the hillscape, surrounded by mature gardens and hedges, creating a peaceful and private sanctuary. This careful integration ensures the house feels like a natural part of its environment. 🌿

At WPA, we are passionate about designing bold, thoughtful spaces that respect their surroundings and foster sustainable living. 🌍

Dundee's Reading Rooms & Blackscroft Regeneration Project – Planning Application submitted.

We are thrilled to share an overview of the Blackscroft Area Regeneration masterplan, a transformative project aimed at revitalizing this historic and underused part of Dundee. Located just east of the Dundee Waterfront and close to the Indigo Mill regeneration, the Blackscroft proposals have been designed to become a thriving mixed-use, community-focused development.

Here’s a glimpse of what’s proposed:

1️ St Roques Library (Former Reading Rooms): A historic building with a new purpose. St Roques is a Category B Listed building, our proposals aim to restore and retain its character while introducing a sustainable new function. The existing roof, which has fallen into disrepair, will be replaced with a contemporary architectural intervention, ensuring the building remains an active asset for the city. A new bar and restaurant preserves the building’s public-facing character, with elements of the existing building given priority in the new interior design. The proposals include for the garden area and historic fountain to be restored to their former glory, offering a venue for live music and events.

2️ Blackscroft Offices (Former Blackscroft Church): This early 1900s redbrick church is to be transformed into affordable apartments, blending history with modern living.

3️ Commercial yard Redevelopment: The proposals include for the currently vacant commercial site to make way for a high quality building of 24 mid-market apartments, featuring a central community courtyard and green spaces.

4️ Blackscroft Park: A new green space connecting to the Dundee Eden Project, offering recreational areas, community gardens, and small allotments for local residents.

5️ Sustainability at the Core: The project includes affordable housing, green spaces, and public amenities, to promote sustainable urban living in the heart of the city. A key aim of the project has also been to reactivate Foundry Lane and create a welcoming link between the city centre and the upcoming Eden project. With close proximity to key amenities, excellent transport links, and a strong emphasis on sustainability, the aim has been that this project will play a role in the ongoing transformation of Dundee.

We look forward to seeing the area flourish and contributing to the city’s evolving urban landscape.

Meadowside, Dundee

We've been working up our design proposals for the re-imagining of the beautiful No. 4 Meadowside, Constitution Road and Euclid Street buildings. Originally home to the General Post Office (for over a 100 years), it was later London Nightclub in the early 2000’s. We are working to retain as much of the existing fabric as possible to provide new characterful & historic city centre homes.

The proposals are centred upon a new planted residents’ courtyard, with roof gardens and biophilic design elements throughout. The existing facades of Meadowside and Constitution road are to be restored, whilst a new build element has been incorporated to Euclid street, replacing the dilapidated franking centre building facing Dundee High School. The design of the new building has been carefully considered to build on the existing rhythm of glazing, floor levels and eaves heights whilst using a restrained palette of materials that complement the existing red and buff sandstone walls. A new glass link entrance will also provide a vertical slot to allow a reading of the original wall construction and a soft joint with the existing building.

House extension, Broughty Ferry

Outline design proposals. No matter the size of project we always have the same approach – design from the inside out and with the clients priorities and personal tastes / aspirations in mind. We think that getting to know you at the beginning is key; it helps us to fit the developing design around you.

In this case our client already had a small existing extension, we based our designs around rationalising their existing home, the aim being to provide a cohesive whole. Although modest in footprint the design of the alterations and extension incorporates some clever features in order to maximise the daylight, views and space available – helping to accommodate their active lifestyle.

PLANNING GRANTED – Dundee's new (old) city block

The Eagle Mill is one of Scotland’s oldest jute Mills and we are very pleased to have secured approval for its future transformation. Built in 1864 as the Baxter Brothers foundry, the preservation and re-use of this building represents an opportunity to retain one of Dundee’s best-known landmarks. The design proposals seek wherever possible to showcase the existing fabric and history of the structure whilst giving the building a much-needed new lease of life for the future.

The proposals (Phase 1 & 2) include new ‘incubator’ start-up units, retail units, a vertical farm within the basement area and contemporary apartments that will retain and showcase existing historical features within the interiors.

Ellieslea Rd, Broughty Ferry.

Our latest bespoke home design.

We are excited to provide a look into one of our latest projects, situated within the well-established area of Broughty Ferry, Scotland.

Why not call us to see what we could do for you?

The team made significant efforts to produce an appropriately scaled, contextually responsive building design with the aim of producing a high quality, architectural dwelling of modest proportions and unique sense of identity.

The dwelling is of a bespoke design that seeks to provide strategically framed views of the natural setting, maximise daylight into the plan and provide a series of external ‘terraces’ that directly open into the building to draw the natural environment inside the living spaces. The plan adopts a distinctive L shape which enables a large desirable garden space to the south, whilst enabling a greater degree of privacy to existing residents.

The scheme will utilise high quality, durable and sustainable materials throughout. A subtle and retained pallet of materials have been chosen to complement the existing building stock, whilst attributing a contemporary urban appearance that is appropriate to the area.
