Dundee's Reading Rooms & Blackscroft Regeneration Project – Planning Application submitted.
We are thrilled to share an overview of the Blackscroft Area Regeneration masterplan, a transformative project aimed at revitalizing this historic and underused part of Dundee. Located just east of the Dundee Waterfront and close to the Indigo Mill regeneration, the Blackscroft proposals have been designed to become a thriving mixed-use, community-focused development.
Here’s a glimpse of what’s proposed:
1️ St Roques Library (Former Reading Rooms): A historic building with a new purpose. St Roques is a Category B Listed building, our proposals aim to restore and retain its character while introducing a sustainable new function. The existing roof, which has fallen into disrepair, will be replaced with a contemporary architectural intervention, ensuring the building remains an active asset for the city. A new bar and restaurant preserves the building’s public-facing character, with elements of the existing building given priority in the new interior design. The proposals include for the garden area and historic fountain to be restored to their former glory, offering a venue for live music and events.
2️ Blackscroft Offices (Former Blackscroft Church): This early 1900s redbrick church is to be transformed into affordable apartments, blending history with modern living.
3️ Commercial yard Redevelopment: The proposals include for the currently vacant commercial site to make way for a high quality building of 24 mid-market apartments, featuring a central community courtyard and green spaces.
4️ Blackscroft Park: A new green space connecting to the Dundee Eden Project, offering recreational areas, community gardens, and small allotments for local residents.
5️ Sustainability at the Core: The project includes affordable housing, green spaces, and public amenities, to promote sustainable urban living in the heart of the city. A key aim of the project has also been to reactivate Foundry Lane and create a welcoming link between the city centre and the upcoming Eden project. With close proximity to key amenities, excellent transport links, and a strong emphasis on sustainability, the aim has been that this project will play a role in the ongoing transformation of Dundee.
We look forward to seeing the area flourish and contributing to the city’s evolving urban landscape.
