Last job of the week completed — this utility room has been finished with wood-effect floor tiles and a clean white subway tile splashback for a bright, modern look. Finished with light grey grout and polished chrome trim to complete the contemporary feel.

This is what tiling looks like these days.

I’ve been tiling for 37 years now. Back in the day, you were using the same size tiles day in, day out same adhesive, grout, silicone. Simple times.

Like everything else in life, things progress. Tastes change. People are happy to invest more in their homes, looking for classy areas they can show off and be proud of. Tiles now come in every shape and size imaginable.

Here are two bathrooms completed within days of each other, complete polar opposites.

Bathroom one:
• Marble effect wall tiles: massive 1200mm x 600mm
• Marble effect floor tiles: 600mm square

Bathroom two:
• Metro style wall tiles: 100mm x 50mm
• Floor tiles: 450mm square

Two totally different looks. Two very different challenges.
Both with stunning end results and both absolutely worth it.

Full bottom floor of a house in Dunfermline done a while back. Stunning Alabama 120cm x 20cm natural finish porcelain floor tile complemented with Fugabella color number 31 grout giving an almost near seamless finish. Expansion joints were left around all perimeters and at door entrances allowing for the under floor heating.

Another split face natural stone feature wall done a few months back. A colour intensifier and sealer applied the following day really brings out the shade variation in this tile. A real eye catcher.

Love working with the large formats. These stunning porcelain tiles looked amazing in the end. A special order all the way from Italy the client told me, then backed it up with, don’t worry, I ordered an extra tile incase one gets broken. Great, no pressure then 😵‍💫
Going back in a few of months to do the full bottom floor of the house with similar tiles.

Contrasting cool grey with beautiful warm browns in the African slate tile makes for a gorgeous modern looking room with a real eye catching finish and detail.
