Langthorns Plantery

Langthorns Plantery Specialist in top quality garden plants and trees, with an eye for the more unusual species as well as popular old timers.

Langthorns Plantery was established in 1977 by Philippa and David Cannon and has been run by their son, Ed Cannon since 2000. Plantery as a name, originated here, as we didn’t fit the brief for a Garden Centre and Nursery tended to either mean wholesale growers or kids playgroup. We are neither and so the Plantery was born. We are passionate about plants and constantly seek out new and exciting sp

ecies, as well as keeping a good range of popular old timers. Plants for every aspect of every garden are encompassed in our vast range. Home propagation is in our makeup and we do as much as time will allow.

They’re great focal points for conservatory’s , patio pot displays or garden borders.

Plant of the weekend is Geranium phaeum Joseph Green. And it’s a beautiful variety with ruffled deep-purple flowers which have a ring of eye catching lime green petals in the centre.
This is a damp and shade lovingly geranium so grows well in woodland borders or can be grown in pots on a shady patio. It can be cut back mid-summer after flowering to encourage a fresh flush of new growth.

We’ve been busy over the last week cutting back many of our late-summer flowering perennials by a third, to encourage more flowers and a sturdier more bushy habit. Ed’s been in his garden Chelsea chopping plants like nepeta and phlox, but we also do it to our plants in pots like helianthus and asters.

And finally last to pick their favourite Chelsea Flower Show plant is Ed. Again with everything looking so good at this time of year he’s picked two Calycanthus Aphrodite and Abelia Mosanensis, both of which he has growing in the garden.
Both of these shrubs are celebrated at Chelsea because of their presence in the garden with gorgeous flowers, lush foliage and wonderful scent.🌱
They’re both prefer a sheltered and sunny spot in the garden and only if necessary a prune after the flowers in spring making they easy to manage.

Plant of the weekend is Rosa Clarence House which Ed has trained to grow up his garage wall. In the sunshine the double blooms of creamy-white flowers look magnificent, especially with the rich glossy foliage behind them.
It’s prized for its scent and repeat flowering. They can get quite big as you can see so are best grown in the ground and trained up a wall or trellis. 🌱
