Langthorns Plantery was established in 1977 by Philippa and David Cannon and has been run by their son, Ed Cannon since 2000. Plantery as a name, originated here, as we didn’t fit the brief for a Garden Centre and Nursery tended to either mean wholesale growers or kids playgroup. We are neither and so the Plantery was born. We are passionate about plants and constantly seek out new and exciting sp

ecies, as well as keeping a good range of popular old timers. Plants for every aspect of every garden are encompassed in our vast range. Home propagation is in our makeup and we do as much as time will allow.

We’ve had lots of deliveries this week ready for the weekend including dwarf fruit trees which are perfect for small garden or pots, our first winter bedding cyclamen and wallflowers and finally some lush herbs like mint, thyme and parsley.

Plant of the week is this stunning cactus Dahlia Electro Pink. It’s quite new and unusual due to it being a cactus flowing dahlia with dark foliage.
From July it starting flowering until we get our first frosts in late autumn, where it will then want some winter protection. It has electric neon-pink flowers which are set off against its lush bronze foliage making it a great centre point for the garden.

This weekend is our Open Day on Saturday 5th September. Ed will be doing two tours the first being 10:30am then one in the afternoon at 1:30pm where he’ll show you our growing grounds, stock beds and gardens. We do still have a few tickets available on our website. All the gardens and behind the scenes will be open to the public and we’ll have some special offers available too. There will also be tea, coffee and homemade cakes available in Ed’s garden with all tea donations going to charity.

Plant of the weekend is Kalimeris incisa Blue Star also known as Japanese aster. Above it’s lush green foliage it has masses of pale lavender blue daisy flowers with yellow eyes for long periods through summer. They thrives in a full sun position and once established it’s quite drought tolerant and resilient against harsh winter conditions.
Plus it’s highly attractive to bees, butterflies or other pollinators in the garden.🐝

Plant of the week is Eucomis comosa Sparkling Burgundy also known as Pineapple lily. During spring deep burgundy strap-like leaves appear then from late summer these striking flower spikes appear showing off pinkish- cream flowers.
Ed has this clump planted in a sunny position next to a low wall, so doesn’t have to dig the bulbs up for winter but in colder areas or if you want them in your pot display they might need some winter protection.
