Something a little bit different for me this weekend.
Cutting in a vinyl floor has never been a strong point of mine however this weekend that’s exactly what I’ve done. This is the first time that I’ve carried out this sort of work in someone else’s house.
The customers asked me about doing it a few months ago then when I was going to do it my car needed repairs and so it go put back but eventually I got there.
It all began when the customers took up there old floor in their bathroom and attempted to try to lay some vinyl tiles, but because the floor was a wee bit upsy downsy it didn’t go very well so they messaged me about it, as soon as I saw the photos of the problem I suggested overboarding the existing floorboards to give a better surface to apply some new vinyl, they agreed that it would be a better idea and things progressed from there.
When I arrived I was face with loose and rocking floorboards which were rocking because of how the joist were, this was remedied by shaving a small amount off the top of two joists so they ran level with each other thus eliminating the rocking. Once this was sorted I then fastened the floorboards back in place.
The next stage was to cut the 6mm ply around the toilet and the basin pedestal, once I was happy with the positioning I proceeded to fix the ply in place using 200 20mm screws spaced at 100mm intervals around each edge and 150mm intervals through the middle of each board.
Finally I then began to cut and stick the vinyl down making sure to not leave and bumps and bubbles, once this was completed I finished off by sealing all around the edges and around the bottom of the toilet and pedestal.
The customers are very pleased with the work that I have carried out.

On friday I carried out some work for a lovely lady who’s not had much luck since buying her house.
I’ve carried out a few jobs that which don’t seem like much but for her it’s made her so very happy that she now has a proper window sill and the skirting that she really wanted, a simple piece of trim attached back where it should be and last but not least the old plywood floor under the stairs has been primed and covered with self levelling compound.
For me that’s two mor first attempts under my belt. Up until Friday I had never fitted a window board before but as you’ll see, I have now and also I had my first ever attempt at using self levelling compound.
Needless to say the customer is very happy with everything that I have done for her.

It’s been another busy weekend had the helm.
At the start of the week I went to my customers house and unbolted their railings from the front of their house, I then brought them back to Earby where I dropped them off with a local man who welded the foot back in place and also strengthened another 2 previous welds.
On Wednesday evening I collected the railings from the welder and on Thursday I started removing all of the old paint sanded and jet washed them and then got them primed a first coat of paint on them.
Friday came and I applied the final 2 coats of paint. On Saturday I returned them to the customers house, but first I had to remove the loose coping stones off the wall clean off all the old mortar and get them re-bedded, once this was done I then re-fitted the railings back in their rightful place.
The next job at the same property was to knock out the pointing at the end of the Apex above the first floor window and get it re-pointed.
After that was completed I was tasked with removing two trees one was an Ash which had signs of ash die back in places and the other was a conifer which was starting to get too tall for the customers to maintain themselves and was starting to impede onto their decking and blocking lots of natural light into the rear of the house and conservatory, so me being me set to work with a set of ratcheting loppers and a rough cut handsaw from Screwfix. The Ash was down and in the skip within 40mins and the Conifer got the same treatment and was down and in the skip within 50mins.
The penultimate job was reduce the size of a bush at the end of the driveway to a more manageable size and height and then finally clear out any debris from in the gutters around the property and to wash all of the green algae from the outside of the gutters.
A lot of time and effort has been put into this job due to the various different tasks, all the prep of the railings were carried out at my house in the evenings after working on other jobs during the daytime etc but that’s all part and parcel of the dedication that I put into running my small one man business this all reflects in the feedback and reviews that I get and also with the overall outcome of each and every individual job.
I may not be perfect in everything that I do but I try to aim high.
Once again the customers were very pleased with all of the work that I have carried out.

This job has been my latest challenge but unfortunately I forgot to take overall before photos but I got some of the repairs along the way.
This particular job had a number of cracks in the ceiling and walls. After some examination of the ceiling I realised that at sometime in its life the ceiling used to be tongue and groove timber and that the plasterboard had bed screwed to it then plastered, my theory was that tongue and groove expands and contracts with moisture/humidity etc which lead me to believe that this was the root cause as the timber is moving it’s putting pressure on the weakest points of the plasterboard (joints) and causing the cracks.
I then needed to decide on the best filler for the job, I came to the decision of using Toupret fill flex, having never used this filler before but watched several videos I discovered that you have to make sure all excess is thoroughly cleaned off because once dried the excess is impossible to sand.
Once this had dried for a minimum of 24 hours a different filler could then be applied over the top and feathered out to blend in. This was how I solved every crack that I could find. Once all the cracks had been repaired everything got a thorough sand and clean before proceeding with the painting.
The photos are just a selection of just some of the worst cracks but there were a lot more which also got the same treatment.
The customers are very happy with the work that I have completed.

A returning customer, who is one of my top 5 followers contacted me saying that whenever the gardener comes and cuts the grass the cuttings blow underneath her existing drain cover and block it up. Would I be able to come up with a better solution to help solve the problem.
Here is what I came up with.
Now people may think I’m mad but I’ve made it out of treated fence rail and an offcut of OSB board 18mm thick, I then coated the whole thing in 2 coats of Bitumen paint and then covered the top with felt for added protection.
I’ve cut out 3 sections for the rainwater pipe to go through and the sink waste etc. I also added some small feet to the bottom to lift it slightly off the ground so surface water can still run underneath.
The customer is very happy with my solution. Time will tell how successful it is.

Here’s another recent decorating job that I have completed for some returning customers.
Newly plastered walls and ceiling which required sealing first before the top coats could be applied.
Slowly but surely the customers house is beginning to feel like a home.
The customers are very happy once again with the work that I have completed.

It’s been a strange week.
On Tuesday my car decided to have a hissy fit and refused to start, so after doing some phoning around etc to organise getting it fixed, I’d lost most of the day. Me being the sort of person who has to be doing something I contacted a customer who had a job in walking distance from my house and made up the rest of the day repairing their garden gate.
Here the outcome from start to finish.
The customers are very happy with the work that I have carried out.

Eventually after waiting for various trades to carry out their part in the process, I’ve been back and forth prepping and painting bits and pieces when ready for a while now but finally I’ve painted and finished the final section on the inside of this garage conversion.
The customer is now very happy with the finished result.

Here’s the finished gates that I have been working on.
The customer asked me to tidy them up for her as there was a lot of peeling paint. Whilst carrying out the prep I quickly realised that at some point in their life someone had used some ply to make the timbers thicker in places and then sealed over the top with some flexible friend which in my eyes helped to start off the rot due to trapped moisture.
I decided to remove the very well rotted ply and re fix the T&G boards straight to the main timbers.
Where I found sections of rot I cut bits out and replaced them sections with like for like timber patches which I glued and screwed in place and then filled.
Other sections I removed all loose material and applied wood hardener before filling using a good two part wood filler.
If I’m honest I could have carried on sanding and removing paint for another 3 days but sometimes you just have to draw a line.
I was at this point when I began to stabilise everything and apply two coat of B-Dec self undercoating eggshell paint in a colour mixed in the paint department at the Barnoldswick branch of Merritt & Fryers.
I will admit that they are probably not perfect but the customer is very happy with the work I have carried out and I believe it might just be would these gates needed to give them one last hurrah.

As promised here’s the last and final update on the new decking. For anyone that is seeing this for the first time I’ll include start to finish photos.
From the original pallet decking on minimal bearers originally built around 8 years ago which had seen its days out for the final time, to a brand new decking area.
Where possible I’ve reused as much of the original timber as possible as it was still in a sound state. All built from 6x2 treated timber, the offcuts have all been black jacked before being concreted into the ground and used for legs.
I’ve reused 3 of the original posts so the customer can attach rope around the edge these can be easily replaced in the future if need be as they are floating legs.
All of this structure has been topped with 146mm x 28mm treated decking boards and the customer has been out in the garden this afternoon painting it all.
The customer is extremely happy with the work that I have carried out.
Another happy new customer. ✅
