🌱 Why Your Lawn May Be Struggling — And How We Can Help Restore It

Many Residents are noticing their lawns looking weaker than usual at this time of year. If yours is showing signs of thinning, patchiness, moss, or an increase in w**ds, there are several common reasons — and all of them can be resolved with the right professional care.

🌧️ Prolonged Wet Winter Conditions
This winter has brought persistent rainfall and saturated ground. Waterlogged soil reduces oxygen around the roots, slows growth, and creates the perfect environment for moss to thrive. Even well‑maintained lawns can appear tired after months of excess moisture.

🪱 Increased Leatherjacket Activity
Leatherjackets (crane fly larvae) have been particularly active this season. They feed on grass roots, causing thinning patches and areas that lift easily. Many lawns across the region are experiencing higher‑than‑normal damage.

💧 Poor Drainage in Certain Areas
Compacted soil or naturally slow‑draining ground can trap water at the surface. This prevents healthy root development, encourages moss growth, and delays recovery as the weather improves.

🌿 Moss & W**d Competition
When grass becomes stressed by weather, pests, or poor soil conditions, moss and w**ds quickly take advantage. Moss thrives in damp, shaded, or compacted areas, while w**ds exploit thin or weakened patches of turf. Left untreated, they outcompete the grass and reduce overall lawn quality.

🔧 Inconsistent or Poor Maintenance
Irregular mowing, incorrect mowing height, lack of seasonal treatments, or nutrient‑poor soil can all contribute to a lawn that struggles to cope with stress. Without routine care, grass becomes thin, weak, and more susceptible to pests, disease, moss, and w**ds.

✔️ How Our Lawn Care Team Can Help
We offer a range of professional treatments designed to tackle these issues and get your lawn back on track:

Aeration & Scarification to relieve compaction, improve drainage, and remove moss and thatch.

Targeted Leatherjacket Management including assessment, monitoring, and treatment options to reduce grub activity.

Soil Conditioning & Drainage Improvements to help water move through the soil more effectively.

W**d & Moss Control Treatments to restore balance and give your grass the space it needs to recover.

Seasonal Lawn Maintenance Plans including correct mowing guidance, fertilisation, w**d control, and overseeding to keep your lawn healthy year‑round.

Spring Recovery Treatments to encourage strong new growth and restore colour and density.

We've been talking about these creatures quite a lot lately, and that's because their 'work' causes gardeners a great deal of distress round about this time of year.

These are leatherjackets, the larval stage in the life cycle of crane flies (aka Daddy Long Legs), Flies have maggots, butterflies have caterpillars and Daddy Long Legs' have leatherjackets.

They're hardly cute are they, but we're not here to judge any creature on its looks - it's what they can do to a lawn that worries us. Those incredibly intricate jaws can munch through grass roots like there's no tomorrow - and - to be fair - once the roots have been destroyed, there really is no tomorrow for the plant.

Now - a smattering of leather jackets in a lawn is not something to panic about. It's biodiversity in action and that's a good thing. However, an infestation of these wee beasties WILL destroy a beautiful lawn.

So if you're noticing any of these on or around your lawn, if your grass is looking poorly or if you're seeing lots of birds hopping around feasting on your lawn - the time to take action is NOW.

Call your local UKLCA lawn specialist for help with controlling leatherjacket populations and repairing any damage they may have inflicted.

Leatherjacket Alert! 🚨 Is your lawn under attack?
If your grass is yellowing, bare & mossy, or being torn apart by hungry birds, you likely have a leatherjacket infestation. The mild, wet winter across Devon has created a "perfect storm," and these grubs are currently devouring grass roots at record speed! 🐛🚫
Don’t let them ruin your garden before summer even starts. We’re here to help!

Why standard garden centre treatments might not be enough:
While nematodes are a great organic option, they often require specific soil temperatures to work and can be hit-or-miss for heavy infestations in early spring.

How we can save your lawn:
✅ Professional Assessment: We’ll confirm if grubs are the culprit (and not just winter stress).
✅ Expert Insecticide Treatment: As licensed operators, we can apply professional-strength Acelepryn. This is a leading-edge insecticide specifically approved for residential lawns that targets leatherjackets while remaining pet-friendly and safe for non-target soil life.
✅ Repair & Recovery: With scarification, aeration, top-dressing & over-seeding, we’ll get your turf back to its lush, green self.

Pro Tip: If you want to check for yourself, soak a patch of lawn and cover it with a black tarpaulin overnight. If you see grey, legless grubs on the surface tomorrow morning, give us a shout!

Need help with moss in your Lawn?

Moss commonly develops in UK lawns when grass becomes weakened and environmental conditions favour moss over healthy turf. Factors such as compacted soil, poor drainage, shade, acidic ground, and a build‑up of thatch create the damp, low‑light environment moss thrives in. When grass is stressed—through incorrect mowing or lack of nutrients—it struggles to compete, allowing moss to fill bare or thinning patches, particularly during the UK’s cool, wet winters.

Main Causes of Moss in UK Lawns

🌧️ Soil Compaction & Poor Drainage
Heavy foot traffic and clay‑rich soils compress the ground, reducing air spaces and preventing water from draining. This leads to waterlogged, stagnant conditions that suffocate grass roots but suit moss perfectly.

🌑 Excessive Shade
Trees, fences, and buildings block sunlight, leaving grass unable to photosynthesise effectively. These shaded, persistently damp areas become ideal habitats for moss.

⚗️ Acidic Soil (Low pH)
While not the only cause, acidic soil makes it harder for grass to thrive. Moss, however, tolerates low pH well and can quickly dominate in these conditions.

🍂 Thick Thatch Layer
A dense layer of dead grass and roots traps moisture at the soil surface and restricts airflow. This creates a persistently damp environment that encourages moss growth.

🌱 Weak or Stressed Grass
Mowing too short: Cutting the lawn too low (scalping) weakens the grass and exposes bare soil, giving moss an easy foothold.
Nutrient deficiency: Poorly fed grass lacks vigour and density, making it less able to outcompete moss.

🌦️ Damp UK Climate
The UK’s naturally humid, wet weather—especially through autumn and winter—provides the perfect conditions for moss to spread.

🚨Warning🚨

Dull lawn blades can lead to lawn discoloration, lawn disease, portions of grass being pulled up during mowing, ragged-looking grass, or even the plant dying. Grass that is cleanly cut can recover more easily, which reduces the risk of diseases like Red Thread.
