Buxus hedging looking sharp and ready for a pair of custom-designed, hand-built obelisks.

Alongside our garden design work, we’ve recently been creating bespoke garden structures, adding unique features that give each space its own character and identity.

My absolute favourite spring bulb. Camassia is a pollinator magnet, a striking architectural feel to the structure of the flower and it happily multiplies with little interference.

I was lucky to experience this impressive specimen at the Belize. I think it’s a strangler fig which begins life high in the canopy, germinating in the fork of another tree. From there it sends roots down through the air. When those roots reach the ground, they thicken, harden, and become new trunks. Over time, they fuse together into pillars, creating a living colonnade. It creates a centrepiece, around which the resort design must have been created.

3,000 young trees into lowland peat.

This ground floods in winter and bakes in summer. Planting here isn’t preference — it’s tolerance.

Alder and Downy Birch for the wettest ground.
English Oak, Cecil Oak, Wild Cherry and Hornbeam on the higher ridges.

Where water sits too deep, we created glades instead of forcing failure.

A central ride and d**e maintain light and structure long term. Wild Cherry was concentrated along these edges to lift the woodland seasonally.

Woodland isn’t about numbers.
It’s about hydrology, structure and succession.

If you’re managing land in Nottinghamshire and want planting that actually establishes — we should talk.

We started with the hedge.

Before a single tree went in, the mixed native perimeter hedge defined the structure of the site.

Hedging isn’t just a boundary.
It creates shelter, slows wind, holds moisture, forms wildlife corridors and establishes the first layer of habitat.

This line was enriched with Guelder Rose and Dogwood — building diversity into the edge from day one.

Next phase: 3,000 mixed-species trees to shape the woodland beyond.

Alongside client gardens, Hook Garden Design also creates native habitats and designs Biodiversity Net Gain sites across Nottinghamshire.

WINTER GARDEN RESET & SPRING-PREP TIDY UP — LIMITED LOCAL SLOTS

I’m offering a handful of one-off winter garden reset days over the next few weeks.
Careful, plant-aware pruning (no harsh hacking back), cutting back old growth, clearing leaves and tidying borders so the garden is in good shape going into early spring.
Ideal if the garden has got away from you this year and you’d like a thoughtful tidy-up rather than a rough hack-back.
If you’d like details, drop me a message — I’m keeping this to a few local jobs only.
